WeChat today launched what it hopes will become the ‘newest social craze’ — its customised and animated emojis (or stickers) app MojiMe, which allows users to insert their face into a selection of cute emojis and then share with friends on WeChat.
The Tencent-owned messaging platform is trying to differentiate itself in the growingly populated selfie and stickers app landscape. Being a Chinese company, Tencent will be well aware of the popularity of emoji stickers in Asia. But the release is also a nod at competition in the selfie space: ‘move over selfies’, its statement reads.
“At WeChat, we strive to connect people and innovate to take traditional forms of communication to the next level,” Poshu Yeung, Vice President of International Business Group, Tencent, told e27.
