その開発主任技師テム・レイ大尉の息子であるアムロ・レイ少年は、「V作戦」の秘密を嗅ぎつけてコロニーに侵入したジオン軍MSザクの攻撃に巻き込まれ、そのどさくさに連邦軍の「V作戦」関係資料を偶然拾ってしまう。 コロニー内の被害は甚大で、一般市民も軍関係者も大半が死亡した。人手不足の中、アムロは連邦軍の開発した試作型MSガンダムのパイロットにされてしまう。

Amuro Ray, the son of development chief engineer Captain Tem Ray, gets involved in the attack of Zeon MS Zaku, who has invaded the colony after intercepting Operation V's secret. In midst of this chaos, he accidentally picks up Federal troops' documents related to Operation V. The colony is heavily damaged, and the majority of civilians and military personnel are dead. Because of the lack of human resources, Amuro is forced to become a pilot for Prototype MS Gundam, developed by Federal troops.
