It's a story set in Edo era Japan, but as the "Champloo" name suggests, it has modern culture mixed into it at every turn, giving a unique aesthetic. Characters use vocabulary written in katakana (like "baito" - part-time job or "model") and use modern slang, young people with bleached hair and piercings or even a beatboxer, appear. It's a historical tale, completely ignoring historical details.
