"Mondaiji" is the Japanese word for "problem child." In Japan there is a prevalent expression that typifies the culture: "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down." This is in striking contrast to the Western expression: "The squeaky wheel gets the oil." Since performers, musicians, and artists stand out and command attention, they could be considered the "problem children" of Japanese society. Instead of passively obeying their parents, "mondaiji" play music, travel abroad, start their own businesses, and creatively express themselves.
「Mondaiji（問題児）」とは日本語で「問題のある子供」を指す。日本では、その文化を典型的に表現する言葉として良く使われるのが、「出る杭は打たれる」という言葉である。これは、「きしむ車輪は油を差してもらえる」という西洋の言葉とは相反する。パフォーマー、音楽家、アーティストなどは、目立つ存在であり、関心を惹こうとする人たちであるから、ある意味で、日本での彼らは「問題児」となりえる。両親にだまってう代わりに、「問題児」は音楽を演奏し、国外に旅立ち、自分の会社を設立し、自分たちを創造的に表現する。
