Now they are using their loans to make such diverse items as sweaters, paperweights in the shape of seals, fish and birds, also souvenirs, postcards, little wooden statues of trolls and paintings of the scenery. In addition to giving the women something to do, the activity is an important source of income and helps them and their families cope financially as well as making their lives more enjoyable. What I find especially interesting about the Norwegian experience is that micro-credit was used not in order to alleviate poverty, but rather as a tool for the social integration of people who would otherwise be leaving the Islands.
