They concluded that no one pattern of aging is healthier than the others: women with different values and skills follow different paths to aging in a positive way. For the current article, we took a page from Helson and Strivastava and examined aging outcomes in another sample of women. More specifically, how do the important personality variables of generativity and authoritarianism relate to aging outcomes over 10 years of time? The answer will advance psychologists' general understanding of the role of personality in healthy development.

Erikson conceptualized generativity as a developmental variable. In its most basic form, generativity is the human concern for the well-being of future generations in general and one's progeny in particular. Erikson argued that generative efforts are most fully realized at midlife, after individual concerns with identify and intimacy have been negotiated. At midlife, individuals broaden the focus of their gaze to include not only care about their families, but also care about the well-being of all future generations. When formulating hypotheses about generativity, psychologists have drawn heavily from Erikson(1950,1980,1983).
