If I may, allow me to interject a personal note. Many years ago, I too had to decide between my values and what I was doing successfully. I was doing very well as a young investment banker in London in the mid-1930´s, and the work clearly fit my strengths. Yet I did not see myself making acontribution as an asset manager. People, I realized, were what I valued, and I saw no point in be-ing the richest man in the cemetery.
I had no money and no other job prospects.
Despite the continuing Depression, I quit and it was the right thing to do. Values, in other words, are and should be the ultimate test.

Where Do I Belong?
A small number of people know very early where they belong.

もしよければ、個人的な覚え書きを差し挟むのを許して欲しい。大分昔に、私も自分の価値と、うまく自分がやれるもののどちらかを選ぶ必要があった。1930年代半ばのロンドンで、私は投資銀行の若手銀行員として非常にうまくやっていた。仕事は明らかに自分の強みとよく合っていた。それでも自分が資産管理マネージャーとして貢献するものとして自分を見てなかった。人々も、私も何が大事なのものなのか、そして墓のなかでお金持ちでいることの無意味さに気付いたのだ。

私は無一文で、他の職につく見込みもなかった。

継続的な鬱状態にも関わらず、私は辞め、それは正しい行いであった。言い換えれば、価値は存在し、究極の選択であるべきだ。
