ある日巻きずしを作りたいな～と思ったとき、我が家に巻きすだれがないことに気づきました。近所で売ってるかもわからないし、売っていても日本製じゃないかもしれないし...と保留にしていたところ、この体験を見つけて「あ、プロの所で作らせてもらえれば安心だ！」と思い申し込みました。
製簾所は浅草の喧騒がうそのようにとても静かな場所です。作業する場所から外が見え、天気も良かったのでとても開放的な気分で体験できました。

One day I decided to make maki-zushi (rolled sushi) and noticed that there was no maki-sudare (rolling mats) in our house. I wasn't sure if there were any in stores in the neighborhood, and even if I found one, it may not be made in Japan, so I just kept it postponed, until I saw this ad. "Oh yes. It would be safe if I made one as I learn from the pro!"
The workshop at a very quiet place I couldn't imagine it was in Asakusa. The process of manufacturing a sudare can be seen from the outside, and felt very spacious.

One day I felt like making a sushi roll but realized I didn't have a sushi mat at home. So I left the idea, thinking I might not find a place that sells sushi mats near my place and even if I find one, they might not be made in Japan. And that is when I found this and thought it would be easier to make sushi rolls with the professionals so I applied. The place was such a quit place, being away from all the noise in Asakusa.
We could see outside from where we made sushi rolls so it felt very open, making my experience such a pleasure especially with the nice weather.

製作は竹の目をそろえることから始まるのですが、一本の竹から割ったものを順番通りに並べる、という丁寧さにびっくりしました！一本の竹から切り出したものをきちんと並べることで、きれいに巻けると聞いて納得です。個人的に一番楽しかった作業は、編みあがった後に竹を切り揃えるところです。切れ味のよい大きなはさみでサクサクッと竹を切る感覚はとても爽快でした。竹は日本で採られたものを使っているそうですし、編み糸部分もとても頑丈で、実家で使っている巻きすだれよりずっと立派なものが仕上がりました。

Creating it starts from sorting knots of bamboo, I was surprised to see they lined bamboo pieces made from one bamboo on order. I was impressed to hear that sorting pieces out of one bamboo makes a nice roll. Personally the most fun work was cutting bamboo pieces neatly after they were knitted. It was very nice to feel bamboo cutting with sharp and large scissors. They said they use bamboos made in Japan, knotted threads are also very robust. I made rolling sudare much nicer than the one used at my parent's house.

I was surprised to see that the process to make a bamboo blind for Maki Zushi. It was started by neatly putting each piece of bamboo sticks in a row. I well satisfied that Maki Zusi is beautifully rolled with the bamboo blind made of one bamboo tree. Personally the most enjoyable process was to cut the hedge of woven bamboo blind. Cutting it fast with a pair of sharp scissors had a pleasant feeling. I heard they used Japanese bamboo.The mesh of it was farm and was made much better than one of my parents'.

Production starts with lining up the grains of the bamboo pieces and I was astounded at how tedious it was to lay out the pieces split from one bamboo in the right order! It made sense to hear that you can roll nicely by arranging the pieces from one bamboo. Personally, the most enjoyable task was to cut the edges off after connecting them. It was a refreshing feeling to cut the bamboo pieces with very sharp and large scissors. With its very sturdy connecting thread part, the finished sushi mat turned out to be much nicer than what my parents were using at their home.
