自由と希望を持ち続ける限り、絶望というものに直面しなければならないからだ。では希望を捨てたらどうなるのか。人間はそうなるとただ理由なしに生きているというだけになってしまう。映画と小説で語り手となっている終身刑を受けて牢獄にいるレッドもその一人だった。自由や希望を持つ事は意味の無い事だと諦めて、再びその気持ちを持つ事によってもたらす絶望を怖がっていたレッドが、アンディに会った事によって徐々に変わっていき、最終的には再び自由と希望を持ったという所は感動的だ。

As long as we continue to have a freedom and hope, we have to face despair. What happens if we abandon the hope? Then We human beings simply live without reason. Red who is in prison declared life sentence as well as a narrator of the movie and the novel is one of them. He abandoned the hope by believing that having a hope and a dream has no meaning and was afraid of despair by having the meaninglessness changes step by step after seeing Andy. It was so impressive that he obtained the freedom and hope again in the last part.

As long as you have freedom and hope, you will also have to face desperation. What if you lose hope? People, then,, live without any meanings. Red, the narrator in the movie and the novel, who is serving a life sentence in the prison is one of them. He gave up freedom and hope to avoid desperation from having freedom and hope, started to change gradually after meeting Andy. It was very touching to see that Red eventually regained freedom and hope.
