Hi, I’m Nozomi Okuma, Marketing Manager at Conyac. My native language is Japanese and I’ve been studying English as a second language for almost half of my life. I don’t have much problem with speaking two languages but when it comes to translating, I realize that the ability that I need for speaking and translating is completely different.
The reason why I started to translate is because I wanted to use my bilingual skill and open up a career as a translator. I didn’t have any education in translation and it is obviously difficult for an inexperienced translator like me to get a job. 코냑(conyac)의 마케팅 매니저인 오쿠마 노조미라고 합니다.
저는 일본어를 모국어로 하고 있으며, 거의 반 평생 동안 영어를 공부하고 있습니다.
사실 저는 말을 할 때에는 영어, 일본어 양 쪽 모두 문제가 없습니다만, 번역을 하게 될 때는 '역시 말하는 것과 번역하는 것은 틀리구나'하고 새삼 느끼게 됩니다.
제가 번역을 시작한 이유는 저의 특기인 2개 국어의 구사 능력을 잘 살릴 수 있는 직업을 찾고 싶었기 때문입니다. 하지만 저는 번역에 관련한 교육도 받지 않은데다가 경력이 전무했기 때문에 일거리를 찾기가 굉장히 힘들었습니다. 하지만 다행히도 코냑(conyac)은 입문자들에게도 번역을 실습할 수 있는 환경을 제공해 주고 있었습니다.
The most difficult part about translation is that many words in one language don’t have an equivalent word in another. Even if they did, using the equivalent word may not fit into the context or the style of the language you are translating into. I needed to gain more vocabulary and know more about grammar and the style of both languages thoroughly.
I practice my skills with every translation. I learn new words and find proper ways to express statements in different languages. Now I am becoming more confident about my translations and am also able to earn more money.
저는 실습을 하는 기분으로 매 번역 작업에 임하였습니다. 작업을 통해 새로운 단어들을 익혔으며, 출발어의 상황을 도착어에서 적절하게 표현하는 방법 등도 배웠습니다. 이러한 노력 끝에, 저는 저의 번역 능력에 좀 더 자신감을 갖게 되었으며 더 많은 보수도 받을 수 있게 되었습니다.
매번 통역할 때마다 저는 이렇게 실력을 갈고 닦습니다. 또 새로운 단어를 배우고, 다른 언어로 스스로를 명확하게 표현하는 법을 배웁니다. 이제 저는 제 통역에 더 자신감이 생겼고, 더 많은 돈을 벌 수도 있게 되었습니다.
There is a variety of documents to translate at Conyac but in my observation the top three types of documents are business related e-mails, articles and reviews. I’ve seen some scenarios and stories being requested for translation as well.
Most texts are usually very short and quite simple.
