I wrote THIS article before. One of close friends of theirs sells “prawn straps” and “a self-portrait image” on BASE. One is delivered by hand, and the other is on sale on the site, but it can be downloaded. It’s a bit farcical to write soberly in sentences, but Mr. Ieiri commented on this saying, “They enjoy their communication through products, which they think as themes.” And I thought his comment was very interesting.
They don’t have a portal, so you can’t find products being sold on BASE. You don’t need to find them. Because you wouldn’t understand why a person is selling his/her self-portrait unless you know the background, and you wouldn’t buy it. So people who buy products on BASE know sellers, therefore purchases occur within circles created by people close to sellers.
In this way, information about products or services spread by word of mouth from a small circle, leading to a certain level of growth. For example, a shop which makes a Japanese poem with your name included received a couple of dozen of order so far, and it currently has stopped receiving orders. And, according to Mr. Tsuruoka, there are shops which makes a couple of million yen a month in sales as well. When I look at my friend’s Tumbler page, sometimes I happen to find something impressive. I comment, re-blog, or react on it. I think that BASE is a service which is built base on these kinds of experiences, with an option of purchasing.
These services let users search products by words, but they don’t let them compare products by prices. They make excellent use of images and recommend their values to people. They are trying to do their business by providing value-added options; communication through products, and experience of creating topics by shopping. I’m sure there will be more of these “media-enabled e-commerce” services in the future.
In outside Japan, there are marketplace-like services such as Etsy, Fab and Fancy. We also saw that Pheed, where some users can charge on their contents shared on the social network site, gathered a bit of attention for a while. And Pinterest and Tumblr, which are not e-commerce sites, but function as referral services, gained a significant number of users as gorgeous content-producing machines.
In Japan as well, a huge fund raiser iQON and a smartphone app and marketplace Fril are drawing attention, and the above-mentioned BASE and Stores.jp are slightly different from regular simple shopping sites. Above all, with so many services out there, we should cast a spotlight on the fact that they are continuing to gain support and grow.On the surface, they all look different and belong to different categories, but I have come to think that there are something in common among these services; which is about “discovery” and “experience.” I examined about these points by taking a look at specific services as examples.
Discover products that AREN’T identified with model numbers -- MONOCO’s concierge-style serviceFab is growing. The startup so far has raised a total of 171 million dollars in funding. In an TechCrunch’s interview back in June last year, Fab CEO Jason Goldberg said they expected to sell 1.8 million items and their sales would reach $140 million for the year 2012. In Japan, there is a service called MONOCO, which has a similar business model to Fab and run by Mr. Takehiro Kakiyama, CEO of FlutterScape, inc.
Just like Fab, MONOCO sells innovative products as "a daily event.” Mr. Kakiyama himself went out to talk with designers and partnered with hundreds of them. Products created by these designers are not mass-produced, but they are not unreachable one-of-a-kind, either. They fit right in the middle of the two categories. Although MONOCO follows the Fab’s business style, products they offer are with full of local designers’ taste.MONOCO creates contents for their products to put them on the site, and “recommends” them daily through emails and on the site to their closed-members.
We live in a world of plenty. “We can’t win unless we have enough edges to strike something,” said Mr. Kakiyama. He thinks buyers play an important role in his business. MONOCO’s team members are mostly non-Japanese. Everyday, while listening to their favorite music at full blast with their headsets on, they create “events” for what they believe cool and sell them to their member=users. Currently, they post 5 - 7 events daily and have come to able to display 500 - 1000 items on the site all the time.
Fashion cannot be discovered by words -- iQON’s fashion discoveryWhen I took a look at iQON right after its launch, I visualized it as a woman’s magazine and talked about things like, whether they would support iPad, or whether they target woman’s magazine market. And now, I think the iPhone app has “revived” the experience of reading magazines.
