The Ants smart webcam is slated to go on sale Wednesday at a price of RMB 149 (US$24.36), according to Xiaomi’s official Weibo account. The “Xiaoyi,” as it’s been dubbed, sports 720p resolution, a 111 degree wide-angle lens with 4x zoom, and the ability to make two-way voice calls. Activated and viewable via the smartphone, it doubles as both a webcam for chatting and a security camera with recording capabilities. The camera automatically records whenever it detects movement in view.

So why did Xiaomi decide to make a fancy webcam? Anyone who follows the company closely knows it’s never the first to create a product. It just makes products that are better and more affordable. These types of smart webcams are all the rage among China’s many young hardware companies right now, as evidenced by their repeat appearances on China’s premier gadget crowdfunding site Demohour. Here’s one that did pretty well, raising nearly RMB 320,000 (US$50,000). And there are many more where that came from.

This isn’t a recent development in Xiaomi’s smart gadget strategy. That blood pressure monitor it co-launched with iHealth last month? Plenty of those littered throughout China’s crowdfunding sites. And let’s not forget MiKey, an added smartphone button inserted into the headphone jack that’s a clear ripoff of Pressy and Kuai Anniu that massively undercuts them for less than a dollar.

Note that Xiaomi itself didn’t make all these gadgets from scratch, but invested and formed partnerships with existing companies to sell them under the Xiaomi name. And with Xiaomi’s solid brand recognition and network of resources, you can bet all those gadgets will sell for less than their competitors. Xiaomi’s swift forays into the smart home industry might bode well for cash-strapped hardware startups looking for benefactors. And for better or for worse, it will accelerate consolidation in a very fragmented vertical.

So, based on this strategy, what gadgets can we expect Xiaomi to unleash next? Well, a smartwatch isn’t out of the question. Home theater projectors are on fire right now. And China has a never-ending need for air purifiers. Those are all gadgets that China has more than enough yet somehow keep surging past their crowdfunding goals.

Xiaomi isn’t the only company tackling the smart home market, though. Tencent, JD, Baidu, Alibaba, and a handful of others are battling for dominance on their respective protocols and platforms. Xiaomi has an advantage thanks to its experience in making both hardware and software that work in unison, but it’s also a bit late to the game.

You probably know the name Jack Ma. The man is, after all, the chairman and founder of Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba, and his word carries some serious weight in Asian tech circles.

What you may not know is that Jack Ma occasionally blogs. I’ve translated his latest piece below, as I think it’s something that everyone should consider, especially those of you working long hours trying to get startups off the ground.

Alitrip claims to have over 10,000 merchants selling travel products. Alibaba is getting bigger names in the travel industry involved too. Today the ecommerce titan revealed that Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific and hotel-booking site Agoda have agreed to join Alitrip in time for China’s equivalent of Cyber Monday, which occurs on November 11.

Rather like India (where Xiaomi also launched a few months ago), Indonesia is a sizable market with a lot of young people but a fairly low smartphone penetration rate. So now’s the time for phone brands to go after these fresh smartphone converts and perhaps secure a customer for life. Xiaomi isn’t the only Chinese brand chasing the market, and homegrown Indonesian challengers like Smartfren want in on the action as well.

This seems odd as the preamp has been used for the last few years by the most reputable repair tech in town (whom I am selling it for) without the issue you speak of. However, for the sake of my eBay reputation and since I did sell it as perfect working order and I can't view it in person to see the problem; I am ok with refunding an amount for repair cost however I feel the $150 estimate is rather high... I won't ask to meet in the middle ($75) but, I propose a refund of $100.

Tencent makes a play for China’s Snapchat generation with $20M investment in Blink

Tencent has made a new social play in the same vein as Snapchat to appease China’s “post-90s” youths. The web giant made a fresh US$20 million series A investment into Blink, a new photo sharing and messaging app out of China. Sequoia Capital, H Capital, ZhenFund, and Innovation Works also participated in the round, according to Techweb.

Tencent became king of China’s online social messaging sphere with the mass adoption of QQ Messenger and kept the throne when it unleashed WeChat. But even though QQ earlier this year boasted a record 200 million concurrent users and WeChat’s growth is only now starting to show signs of saturation, the web giant is actively looking for the next big thing for young people who no longer think WeChat is cool.

Blink, which is available in both Chinese and English (although the English can be a bit rough at times) works like this: the camera comes on as soon as the app is opened. Thumbnail images of all the user’s friends line the right side. Click one of them to snap a photo or hold to take a 16-second video, then add some MS Paint-style graffiti, text, and an audio message. When the recipients get it, they can add on to the photo with their own embellishments and send it back. The photos and videos disappear after they’re swiped away, but screenshots are allowed and senders can choose to save the original image to their phone. There’s no history of any chat dialog.

It’s a fun and easy-to-use app, but the image editing options are perhaps a bit too simple for many users. Brush strokes only come in one size, and text is always white, centered, and in the same font. There are no filters, stickers or other fun effects to pick from.

Tencent contributed to US-based Snapchat’s US$60 million funding round last year.

Blink is available for free on both iOS and Android.

But Jack Ma has a slightly different angle. Ma told CNBC newscasters, minutes after Alibaba listed on the New York Stock Exchange on September 22, “Customers first, employees second, and shareholders third.” What the newscasters didn’t realize was that when Ma thinks of customers, he’s not talking about everyday consumers in the same way as Bezos. To Ma, his customers are the small businesses that use the firm’s Taobao and Tmall marketplaces. Speaking at Stanford in 2013, Ma outlined this clearly:

By 2020, ecommerce in India is expected to hit somewhere around US$50-70 billion, according to a joint report of KPMG and the Internet and Mobile Association of India.
