Netflix eyes Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan; but will it score?

There is no stopping this train as it seeks to trailblaze its way to video streaming dominance in the global market. Question is, will it succeed?

Hot on the heels of its launch in Japan, South Korea expansion announcement and a possible partnership with Chinese media firms, Netflix is now set to launch in Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan by early 2016.

The US-based video streaming behemoth — which has a US$1.7 billion funding raised through debt financing and private equity — will be streaming a curated selection of popular TV shows and films on most Internet-capable screens. The subscription fees for these countries have yet to be disclosed.

その米国を拠点とする巨大なビデオストリーミング事業（デットファイナンスと未公開株式からなる17億米ドルの基金を持つ）は精選された人気TV番組や映画を、インターネットを利用可能なスクリーンで流すだろう。各国の受信料はやがて公開される。

“As the central hub in Southeast Asia, Singapore is a sophisticated and diverse place that will find much to love about the Netflix service,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

Obstacles

This may come as good news for many in Asia who have had to pay extra for VPN services in order to access Netflix. With the elimination of this VPN cost, will it be enough to lure a large pool of new customers?

The answer may have been yes…if it was one or two years ago, but the video streaming landscape in Asia has changed drastically in recent months.
