This isn’t the first time Xiaomi has given out beta versions of its products to its following of nerd-fans. Last December, the company gave out its then-new smart router for the RMB1 in a flash sale, but those who were lucky enough to nab one had to build it themselves.

Giving away early incarnations of these devices is all part of the Xiaomi spirit – for the MIUI ROM that powers its smartphones (and will also power its tablets), weekly updates are derived from fan input on its message boards.

But it’s not the first time Tencent entered into Alibaba’s turf. The Chinese instant messaging giant rolled out customer-to-customer & business-to-customer marketplaces and online payments service Tenpay around the time when Taobao marketplace got much traction and beat eBay China.

・Online game revenues increased 23 percent QoQ to RMB 10.39 billion (US$1.67 billion). Tencent explained the growth was mainly driven by increased revenues from smartphone games integrated with WeChat and its QQ instant messenger service, as well as stronger PC gaming demand for titles such as Blade and Soul.

・Tencent’s Q1 operating profit was RMB 7.79 billion (US$1.27 billion), an increase of 64 percent QoQ or an increase of 54 percent YoY.

Samsung still rocking China

Despite all the homegrown competition, Samsung is still ahead of the pack in China, where it leads with 18 percent market share. Xiaomi got a huge boost in its home market in the newest numbers, now moving up to third place. Canalys doesn’t give the full list of 10 for either China or the global line-up.

Weixinhai isn’t the only one in this business. Adsit has been in online marketing industry since 2007. Now one of their major offerings is WeChat public account development. The company initiated the business last year, serving big names such as Starbucks and P&G. Xue Wenyi, CEO of Adsit, said in an interview last year that the company expected to see tens of millions yuan in revenue from some 60 clients by year end and projected the total revenues would quadruple in 2014.

There’s no shortage of online job finder sites in China – from ChinaHR to 51Job to Zhaopin – but that’s not stopping a Chinese startup from entering this space. That’s because figures show many countries have more tech jobs than there are computer science students, making IT jobs an important niche. And so Nashangban is a jobs site dedicated to such jobs, featuring open positions at top web giants like Baidu, Sina Weibo, Alibaba, and UC Web.
