The first is to bring the country on board with digital technology, which will require an aggressive tech infrastructure plan — particularly in the telecommunications sector. The second is priming the manufacturing sector for growth, as it was an area that picked up US$2 billion of foreign investment. Thirdly, as the majority of Myanmar’s population lives in rural areas — the country has to prepare for urbanisation and plan for the shift to local governance.

The greenfield advantage has drawn in a number firms with experience navigating the emerging markets. Besides the Norweigian teleco Telenor, German venture builder Rocket Internet arrived in Myanmar with a number of e-commerce platforms as soon as it opened up and Google announced earlier this year that Gmail was now available in Burmese.

As for deals, last year a pair of Myanmar e-commerce startups received funding from Malaysian VC Frontier Digital Ventures. The rounds were undisclosed, but put it into perspective — digital startup NEX raised a small round of US$150,000 from Singapore’s Blibos Group.

Cambodia, more social than tech

Compared to other Mekong markets, Cambodia’s much smaller market of 15 million puts it at a disadvantage. Similar to markets like Singapore, Cambodia-based entrepreneurs have to think beyond its borders right from the start and that may be tough as many local founders who are not well-versed in English.

In terms of resources, the Cambodian tech scene has its own tech blog Geeks in Cambodia that covers topics such as mobile, gadgets and social good. Tech incubators such as KOTRA have also shown up on scene, but the projects they support range from IT and software to climate change and green energy. The focus as it seems is mostly on social enterprises instead of tech entrepreneurship.

Rocket Internet is also in Cambodia, having launched e-commerce site Kaymu earlier this year.

On-demand home service Handy raises $50M in round led by Fidelity

On-demand home service provider Handy has raised $50 million for its series C round of funding, led by Fidelity Management and Research Company. The company said that this new investment will help solidify its position as a market leader in the home services space across the United States and the United Kingdom.

Other investors in this round include existing ones like TPG Growth, General Catalyst, Highland Capital, and Revolution Growth.

Indeed, the timing of Handy’s investment is interesting: following the shutdown of one of its main competitors, Homejoy. That company was plagued by worker classification lawsuits and also by being unable to raise enough funding. With a model similar to Homejoy’s, Handy isn’t immune to lawsuits and is in fact dealing with at least one such case.

To date, the company has now raised over $110 million. The funding also comes on the heels of hiring Ben Kelly, Birchbox’s former director of data science. Kelly is filling a similar role, where he’ll be using analytics and data to try to improve the efficiency of Handy’s matchmaking service.

xCraft drone maker wins an investment from Shark Tank celebrity investors

The celebrity investors on Shark Tank have unanimously agreed to invest money into drone maker xCraft.

Charles Manning and founder JD Claridge made a successful pitch on the popular ABC television show, raising money for a drone that can take off like a helicopter and move forward like an aircraft. The outcome was revealed on Friday, as the pre-recorded Shark Tank episode aired.

TEL AVIV, Israel — Investors are still afraid of investing in games because they don’t know how to pick hits. But one Israeli investor said that he gets over that problem by looking at both the potential of games and finding the right teams that can repeat what they’ve done before.

That deal helped trigger the social-casino game frenzy in Israel, and now the overall Israeli game sector has expanded to 200 game companies across social casino, marketing tech, educational games, and online gambling.

“When you get it right, nothing grows as fast,” said Levy-Weiss, speaking at the Casual Connect Tel Aviv event in Israel.

Levy-Weiss went on to delineate the characteristics of a successful game company and what he looks for when he is funding companies.

It’s a very short path to market. There’s a growing talent pool. Are there any rules to help you succeed?

“There are no guarantees, but there are critical rules to follow to get above the noise,” Levy-Weiss said.

He said there is no such thing as “too good people.” A company is a sum of its people. You have to only recruit the best to work with you.

Having talent mitigates the risk of a game company. Those risks are plentiful. They include the rarity of hits, fierce competition, growing user acquisition costs, the lack of inexpensive viral channels, and low exits for multiples, said Levy-Weiss.

Levy-Weiss also said there is no such thing as moving too fast.

“Speed is the No. 1 competitive advantage of a startup,” Levy-Weiss said. “If you end up not being fast, you will lose to the big guys. You can beat a brand chess master if you move twice for every move he makes.”

You have to respond to your customers and “find your love,” meaning you have to tweak the game to get it right for consumers. He noted that Zengaming had to experiment for a while before it found success with its network of esports participants.

“If your core game loop is not working, it won’t just suddenly start,” Levi-Weiss said. “If you are not sure you are a winner, it’s probably not.”
