Malaysian financial comparison startup iMoney raises $2 million

iMoney, a free online personal finance platform that helps users make comparisons between loans, credit cars, and other banking services, today announced it has raised $2 million in a series A funding round.

This funding is from a consortium of internationally renowned investors featuring Jungle Ventures, and other investors include 500 Startups, Rebright Partners, ECONA AG, Vogel Ventures, IMJ Fenox, Fenox Venture Capital (Full disclosure: Fenox VC is an investor in Tech in Asia. Almost all social shopping services are depending on Alibaba as a majority of items for those sites to index are from Taobao and Tmall. Both Mogujie and Meilishuo make most of revenues from referral commissions, a large percentage of which is from Alibaba properties — The rest is from display advertising.

It’s not the first time Mogujie is rumored to be merged into Alibaba. Social shopping is one thing that Alibaba seems never to have done right. It also launched a Pinterest clone, WoW, in the same month as Mogujie. From then on a handful of social shopping or online shopping sharing services were released by different divisions of the company. But none of them has been widely adopted as compared with Mogujie or Meilishuo. Most recently it opened up the social shopping platform for everyone to set up a Pinterest-like service there.

The number of fixed-line telephones dropped 7.75 million in the first three quarters to 270 million sets, accounting for 18.3% of the total phone users.

In the first three quarters of 2013, the revenue of telecom industry climbed 8.6% YOY to 870.9 billion yuan ($142.2 billion), while the turnover of e-commerce division surged 35% YOY to 7.5 trillion yuan (source in Chinese).

China planned to construct seven backbone network nodes in the cities of Chengdu, Wuhan, Xi’an, Shenyang, Nanjing, Chongqing, and Zhengzhou, according to the MIIT.

169 network and 163 network operated by China Unicom and China Telecom respectively are the two major backbone networks in China, accounting for over 80% of the Internet traffics in China. Currently, there are only three major network nodes in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.

The construction of new backbone network nodes not only increases the data exchange efficiency, but also introduces Internet resources to the middle and western areas of China, according to Zhu Jun, vice director of Development Department under the MIIT.

中国の二大基幹ネットワークはChina UnicomとChina Telecomが運用する169ネットワークと163ネットワークであり、中国国内のインターネット利用の80%以上を担っている。現在は、北京、上海、広州の三カ所に主なネットワークノードがあるだけだ。

Flirtey-atious: Drones to drop Zookal textbooks to Australian students

Textbook rental site, Zookal, will use the services of Flirtey to send parcels through drones to Australian students. The service will cut down delivery time

Zookal, Australia’s student textbook rental site, has announced a partnership with commercial drone service Flirtey to provide a unique parcel delivery solution to support its textbook dispatch.

The partnership marks the first use of fully automated commercial drones in the world.

教科書レンタルサイトのZookalは、Flirteyの無人飛行機を使ってオーストラリアの学生に荷物を届ける予定だ。これにより、配達時間を短縮するという。

The partnership will see Zookal using Flirtey to deliver parcels free of charge, directly to a customer’s location. Customers within the drone zone will receive a notification on their smartphone that will enable them to track the parcel via GPS. They will then be able to receive the parcel directly at any outdoor location. This delivery method will significantly reduce waiting times from two to three days to as little as two to three minutes.

The drones are able to fly themselves to a pre-determined destination. They also come equipped with collision-avoidance technology in order to avoid trouble with trees, towers, birds, and high winds. The drones are operated by baterries.

Earlier this month, the company raised a US$550,000 in funding, bringing its total investment to date to over US$1.98 million.

Ahmed Haider, CEO of Zookal, said the joint venture with Flirtey came out of projections the company made about the future cost of parcel delivery.

Here at JustGiving, we’ve been monitoring the increasing power of mobile fundraising and its impact on social media since early 2012, when stats revealed huge growth in this area. There has been much excitement as we have now hit the inflection point of mobile internet users exceeding desktop users.

In this article, we share our latest insight and explore the trends and data that make social and mobile a non-negotiable part of any charity’s online fundraising strategy.

1. Facebook’s usage is increasingly mobile

It’s the world’s largest social network, and between April and June of 2013, more than 2.9 million active Hong Kong users visited Facebook on a daily basis. Of these users, a staggering 2.4 million (82.7 per cent) used their mobile device to visit the social network. Facebook also state that almost half of all Hong Kong citizens use Facebook daily, and that number continues to grow. This has massive implications in terms of making sure charity’s websites are being optimised not only for mobile, but also for use on social networks.

2. Facebook mobile shares have a higher value than desktop shares

Integrating fundraising and donations with Facebook’s timeline is an enhancement that can massively increase the amount of shares to a charity’s Facebook page, and consequently the number of donations. Interestingly, those shares are even more powerful when a mobile user sees them, as they are 3 times more likely to be shared than content viewed via a desktop device. This means mobile shares are more valuable to charities in terms of the potential of that wider reach to bring in more donations.

3. Sharing breeds sharers…and donors

Everyone wants more donors and our data shows us that donors who share are even more valuable. One in five donation shares result in another donation, and one in ten shares result in another share. So each sharer brings in not only more donations, but also more people and therefore more leads.

4. Mobile users share twice as much as desktop users

If donors who share are more valuable than those who don’t, then mobile users are the cream of the crop, as they share even more. This demonstrates how social and mobile are inextricably linked and highlights the importance of integrating social and mobile tools into your campaigns in order to increase the impact and their success.

5. Making it easier to donate on mobile means more people donate

At JustGiving, we spent the best part of 6 months rebuilding our donation process from the ground up, with the key focus on optimising for mobile. The results show that more money is being donated by smartphone users than ever before – over HK$37 million from about 100,000 super fast donations. It highlights that removing friction from your donation process can be really effective.

モバイル端末で募金ができると、多くの人が募金する

6. Slacktivism is a myth

The term ‘slacktivism’ is used to describe “feel-good” measures that people take, in support of an issue or cause, that have little effect other than making the person take satisfaction from the feeling that they have contributed. It’s often used to question the value of a Facebook ‘like’, or a tweet, denigrating the people who ‘like’ as slackers. In reality, these ‘slacktivists’ are actually much more likely to donate than your regular ‘activists’, so cut them some, well, slack!

怠け者論は神話

「怠け者論（スラクティビズム）」とは、人々が何かの問題や原因を支援することで「良い気分」になるが、実際には自分が貢献したという自己満足以外に特に結果を生まない「怠け者」の行動を説明するために使用される言葉だ。Facebookの「いいね！」やツイッターのつぶやきの価値を疑問視するためによく使われ、「いいね！」を押す人たちを怠け者扱いし批判する意味が含まれる。実際はこういった「怠け者」は一般の「活動家」よりも募金する傾向にあるのだから、私たちも怠けずに彼らを大いに活用するべきだ！

7. Mobile users are the ultimate anti-slacktivist

Sharing content on Facebook raises the visibility and awareness of charities, but as often is the question from those higher up the managerial chain, what’s the ROI? What’s the value of people sharing on mobile to Facebook? Research shows that mobile supporters who share are 7 times more likely to donate than those who don’t.

7. モバイルユーザは究極の「怠け者じゃない人」

Facebook上で内容をシェアすることは募金を可視化し注目を集めるが、（経営層がよく議題にするように）投資対効果はどうなのだろうか？モバイルでFacebokにシェアする人々が感じる価値とは何なのか？調査によると、モバイルサポーターでシェアする人はそうでない人の7倍寄付する可能性が高まるという。

8. Mobile & tablet traffic is going through the roof

The importance of tablets and mobile to digital strategy is well documented, and the second quarter of 2013 saw some explosive growth in the category with research showing that tablet devices convert at a much higher rate than mobile. In January, mobile and tablet traffic made up 46% of the visits to the JustGiving site, and by August it was up to 48%. Add to that the figure that approximately 40% of all visits to fundraising pages on the JustGiving site are from mobile devices (not including tablets), and it’s clear why it’s important to give mobile users of charity websites a great experience.

Meikka: Luxury Handbag Rental Service

China has become world’s largest market for luxury products in the wake of the economic development and the formation of middle class. However, the daunting prices of luxury handbags are still not affordable for every handbag-conscious fashionistas.

Meikka, a Chinese Rent the Runway clone focused on handbags, can ease the torture of luxury enthusiasts by allowing them to hire designer handbags such as Channel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, etc., for a fraction of the retail price. The platform will deliver and pick up the handbags from customers who can rent with around 0.6% of the retail price per day.

Meikka：高級バックレンタルサービス

中国は経済成長や中流階級の発生によって、今や高級嗜好品の世界最大の市場となっている。しかし、目が飛び出るような金額の高級バックは、未だにハンドバッグを愛するすべての人の手に届くものではない。
