Looking to learn more about the progress that the Indonesian startup community has made over the past year, e27 interviewed Rama Mamuaya, the founder of leading Indonesian tech blog DailySocial and organiser of Sparxup. Rama shared some of his thoughts and opinions on what has been happening and how things are changing in the local scene.

In your opinion, how has the tech startup ecosystem in Indonesia grown over the past year? What major changes have you seen in the last six months?

The Indonesia Startup scene did not grow as fast as expected. We haven’t reached a critical point where businesses can make a lot of money from web services yet. But I am seeing startups starting to pay attention to business models. They are now attempting to work on having some kind of money making plans. Last year I saw startups being more product oriented, however I think this is changing.

Another example is maybe Harpoen. Not so much on monetization but at least they have shown great improvement over the last couple of months. They are a new concept for location based service. They are constantly innovating their product user experience.

Foreign companies coming here are definitely driving the growth of the Indo startup ecosystem. Companies like Google, Research In Motion, GREE Ventures, Rocket Internet, SK Telkom and Veritrans just to name a couple. We are also seeing the entry of Japanese entrpreneurs and investors like Cyber Agent. They typically contribute via capital investment, sharing knowledge and know-how which goes a long way in educating and engaging the industry players here.

We have seen an influx of foreign investors into Indonesia over the past year, what are your opinions about their contribution to the local community and where do you see opportunities for investors who are yet to enter the Indonesian market?

Mobile space, particularly the low end. There is huge potential in this space but just not well exploited yet. Low end mobile market currently only has a few big players like Blaast. We are talking about a large low end mobile market outside of Jakarta, and the majority of population in indonesia. Low end mobile market as in feature phones, not smartphone. Smartphone market is probably only 20 percent of the total mobile market in Indonesia.

BlackBerry is only big in Jakarta, the rest of Jakarta uses other 2000 over feature phones. We are talking about those Nokia US$40 kind which are good for SMS and making phone calls. Indonesians are practical in that sense. While those are basic features matters most to this market, but that doesnt mean they won’t spend on songs, ringtones and wallpapers. In reality, low end market users spend just as much as smartphone users.

There is too much focus on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry for just a fragment of the entire mobile market.

Mobile and e-commerce is currently trending in Indonesia. Do you see this continuing over the next one to two years? If not, what new trends are emerging?

These two are trending, yes. The economy will continue to be driven by the rise of the middle class. There’s definitely potential for e-commerce to be big here in one to two years with more players coming in to provide such services. The only thing is people need to gain more exposure to international merchants and reduce anxiety around online payments. People are generally still not used to online payments/shopping but this is slowly changing.

Readers may remember last year when we featured Metamoji’s 7notes iPad application, which conveniently converts your handwriting into text. Recently, the company also pushed out a similar note-taking application called Note Anywhere. And so far, Note Anywhere has been performing pretty well.

After about a week at number one in Japan as the top free app overall, it’s currently ranked ninth — although it is still first in the ‘productivity’ category. It appears to be catching on in the US market as well, and is currently number eight in the ‘productivity’ category there.

Of course the 7notes application was far from free at $7.99. So I found it curious that Metamoji had taken a different pricing approach with Note Anytime. Kyosuke Tsuda of Metamoji explained a little more about this decision:

Through our experience with 7notes, we learned that for the global market, even a $1 charge is not good [if we want] to expand our customer base. [So] we decided to follow Freemium strategy. Our strategy is not just on selling add-on of apps but extend server features after we launch Note Anytime for Windows 8, iPhone, and Android, [which is] planned within the next several months.
