As organizations grow their founders often become less able to influence what happens within them. In a way Microsoft had outgrown Gates, both in terms of what he was able to contribute to the company by way of technical knowledge and influence appropriate for succeeding in the modern market, and also what Microsoft was able to offer him in terms of the kind of challenge that he needed to push his intellect and abilities to the maximum, and keep him satisfied on a personal level. When that happens it is usually time to move on.
