日本ではmixi、モバゲータウン、GREEなどの既存SNSや、参入してから各メディアに取り上げられたTwitterに押されて普及が進んでおらず、 「フェイスブック後進国」とも呼ばれている。前田邦宏は、これらの要因として、「日本人と海外との人間関係の数」がそもそも少ないこと、mixiなどの既存SNSがユーザーを押さえていること、「グローバルなネットワークというメリットが日本人にとって弱い」ことを挙げている。

JAPAN has several existing SNSs, such as mixi, Mobage Town, GREE, and Twitter which was played up by various media after entry. Such existing SNSs have strong power of influence, and this is the reason why Japan is called as primitive country of Facebook. Mr Kunihiro Maeda explained the reasons as follow: less number of Japanese having having international human relationships, strong influence power of existing SNSs in Japan, such as mixi, and the advantage of global network, which is not appealing for Japanese.
