曲線に関するひずみエネルギ最小化に関しては，与えられた向きで任意の2点を通過するエネルギ最小値を検索する方法が提案されている．これらを拡張させたのが井上らであり，パラメトリック曲線の組み合わせで創ることのできる曲面に関するひずみエネルギによる曲面最適化を行っている．
