As Jack Sams, one of the IBM executives who signed the contract with the 21-year-old Gates to supply the operating system for the first IBM PC, recalled: 'When he came out, I thought he was the office boy.'
It was a mistake that IBM would regret. Gates was aware of the impression that his youth created, and used it to good advantage.
