Youth also had its advantages, however. For one thing, it meant that Gates' business acumen was often underestimated in the early days. As Jack Sams, one of the IBM executives who signed the contract with the 21-year-old Gates to supply the operating system for the first IBM PC, recalled: 'When he came out, I thought he was the office boy.'
It was a mistake that IBM would regret. Gates was aware of the impression that his youth created, and used it to good advantage.
