At the chapter 23, the role of Levite changed. When they crossed over the desert, their role was to transport the tabernacle and its object. However, as they did not have to do it anymore, they began to help priests. Perhaps they also helped them in the desert, but their responsibility is described more specifically here. The chapter 26 describes about the gatekeeper. According to Chronicles I chapter 9,17-33, they had different responsibilities.
One of them was to keep the fate. In other words, they checked to prevent it from entering "dirty elements" .
