Home to a Southeast Asian unicorn, Malaysia is a hotspot for startups
With increased government support and funding from VCs, Malaysia is cultivating a vibrant startup scene, and MaGIC wants to help nurture it
Only a month ago, Malaysia-based e-hailing app (although it now touts itself as Singapore-based company), GrabTaxi, announced that it raised a whopping US$400 million from China’s taxi app giant Didi Kuaidi, American investment firm Coatue Management, Chinese sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corporation, along with a few shareholders.
This funding increases the four-year old startup’s war chest to US$700 million, bringing its valuation to a staggering US$1.8 billion.
Why is this particularly significant?
Well, because it marks a huge milestone in the country’s bid to grow its startup ecosystem that can hold its own not only regionally, but also globally. GrabTaxi has essentially become the first unicorn to have been born in Malaysia. In fact, it’s one of the only five — which include Vietnam’s VNG (estimated valuation US$1 billion), Thailand’s Lazada (estimated valuation US$1.2 billion), Singapore’s Garena (estimated valuation US$1 billion) and InMobi (estimated valuation US$1 billion) — to graze in the fields of the Southeast Asian startup ecosystem.
It has also become a source of inspiration for entrepreneurs in Malaysia, proving that a local startup has the ability to attract attention from major global VCs, and hold its own against colossal rivals like US-based Uber, which has ten times the amount of funding in its stash.
GrabTaxi isn’t the only success story to come out of Malaysia either. Jobstreet.com was acquired by Australia’s job ad portal SEEK for US$524 million.
Other startups have also found favour and fortune, albeit on a smaller scale.
Two years ago, Carlist.my, an automotive deal site, secured a US$13.5 million from Australia’s Carsales.com.
Other burgeoning Malaysian startups include mobile bus-ticketing platform CatchThatBus, which nabbed a US$1.5 million pre-seed funding from Jungle Ventures and 500 Startups only a week ago.
The IoT space is also seeing promise; one startup being WaryBee, which its founders describe as a “wearable technology for personal safety that can be worn as fashion jewellery and used to trigger SOS alerts discreetly”.
