In the left angle of a little bridge was house with a half-open door; above it a room, that of Shylock, ant then three more rooms. The actors played from each window on all four floors. Our amphitheatre of spectators was surrounded by three- storied houses whose windows were filled by the occupants and their friends. To the left a shop had been rented and here a forestage had been built to the side, in front of the canal. We found ourselves in the midst of a stage set that was itself alive.
