There’s no reason to think that’s going to change in 2013 either.

Commercially, we have already written quite a bit about how Chinese companies are having trouble expanding abroad. There are lots of reasons for this, but one of the biggest is that some of China’s first international tech companies have behaved badly or been shoddy enough to put people off. Consequently, other countries are viewing Chinese companies with increased suspicion, and given the political tensions in the air, that’s only likely to get worse in 2013.

そして、こういう状況が2013年に変わると考えられる理由もない。

商業面では、中国企業が海外進出でいかにトラブルを抱えているかについてたくさんの記事を書いてきた。これには多くの理由があるが、1番大きな理由の1つは、最初に海外進出をした中国のグローバル企業の振る舞いが悪いことがあったり、プロダクトがみすぼらしすぎて人を遠ざけてしまったことだ。その結果、中国企業はますます疑いの目で見られるようになっている。そして、係争中の政治的な緊張を考えると、2013年の商業面での状況はさらに悪くなるだろう。

The field of e-commerce doesn’t appear to be immune to the Wall, either. Chinese companies hold the vast majority of the domestic e-commerce market, but outside of the mainland, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, they have practically nothing. And while social e-commerce is an up-and-coming market that Chinese firms like Sina are beginning to exploit, there’s no sign that this will result in any increased interconnectivity either since China’s social media platforms are more or less China-only and most foreign social platforms are blocked.

The one area of tech-related commerce that seems untouched by the Wall is mobile, where Chinese and foreign devices and apps compete both domestically and internationally, with a relatively free market. But with Huawei and ZTE attracting increasing attention for their connections to China’s government (and Iran’s repressive regime), interest in Chinese brands abroad will likely drop a bit this year. Domestically, the once-free app marketplace is due for some regulation, and while it’s not clear yet exactly what will happen, insiders fear the move could block some foreign apps from competing in China while weakening Chinese-developed apps in the global marketplace by slowing them down.

If it works out that way — and we’ll find out sometime this year if it does — everyone loses, and the Wall grows higher still.

Outside of the mobile sector, China’s VPN ban and protectionist practices have made it into one of the worst countries on earth for foreign tech companies to try to enter and compete in. Whole industries (like social media or console games) are effectively banned, in part to leave room for domestic competitors on whom the government can exert more control.

This allows for quicker domestic development initially, but it stifles competition, pushes entrepreneurs away from developing globally relevant web products, annoys other countries, and ultimately is yet another way to ensure that when Chinese users get on the web, they’re seeing something completely different than virtually everyone else in the world. At present, it seems that in many cases Chinese tech companies and foreign governments aren’t even understanding each other on the most fundamental levels.

4 Golden Rules to Monetize Your Apps

The world is getting app-ified. Apps are driving the mobile internet ecosystem forward and have emerged as one of the biggest forms of media, entertainment, and utility on mobile. As a result, it is important for developers to devise a successful monetization strategy while they continue spurring the innovation cycle.

Gartner forecasts that the mobile advertising industry in Asia Pacific will grow from $1.6 billion in 2011 to $6.9 billion in 2015, and this presents a massive opportunity for developers to maximize the revenue potential from their apps.

So with that in mind, here are four golden app monetization rules for app developers and publishers to consider:

世の中はアプリ化している。アプリはモバイルインターネットのエコシステムを発展させ、メディア・エンタメ・モバイルユーティリティの大きな形体の1つとして台頭した。その結果、デベロッパーがイノベーションサイクルに拍車をかけ続けると同時に、成功するマネタイズ戦略を考えることも重要となっている。

Gartnerは、アジア太平洋地域におけるモバイル広告産業は2011年の16億ドルから2015年には69億ドルに成長すると予測している。ということは、デベロッパーにとっては、自身の開発アプリの収益を最大限に引き上げるための大きなチャンスがあるということだ。

そのことをふまえ、アプリのデベロッパーとパブリッシャーが考慮すべき、アプリマネタイズの黄金律4か条を以下に紹介しよう。

Rule 1: Deciding the right ad placement strategy

It is essential for app developers to understand that the right combination of ad placement and ad format will be critical in creating a successful loyal user base. The key is to ensure that ads do not impact the user experience of the app. Imagine the app as your favorite magazine. The most impactful spaces in terms of noticeability and maximum revenue generation are the first and last pages, so why not replicate the same tactic with your app?

1．適切な広告配置戦略を決める

理想的なロイヤルユーザーベースを構築するには広告の配置場所と形式を適切に組み合わせることが重要である、ということをアプリのデベロッパーは必ず理解しなければならない。広告がアプリのユーザーエクスペリエンスに影響を与えないようにすることが鍵だ。自分が開発したアプリをお気に入りの雑誌に例えてみよう。人目のつきやすさ、収益の最大化という観点から見て、最も効果のあるスペースは表紙と裏表紙だ。その同じ方法を自分のアプリでもやってみたらどうだろう。

Hence, launch and exit ads are extremely effective, conspicuous, and will yield a higher income as advertisers are willing to pay a premium for it. In addition, interstitial ads which are viewed between game levels or any natural break in the app experience tend to be more fruitful.

そういうわけで、ゲームの開始と終了時の広告は非常に効果的で人目につきやすい。しかも、広告主はそういう場所での広告に進んで料金を払おうとするので、通常よりも高い収入を得ることができる。さらに、ゲームのレベルごと、もしくはアプリの使用中に自然に発生する小休止ごとに表示される断続的な広告の成果も高くなる傾向にある。

Rule 2: Overcoming the billing hurdle

Unlike developed markets, emerging markets like much of Asia have unique challenges. While mobile penetration is more than 100 percent across countries in South East Asia (according to BMI, Q2 2012 and PwC Analysis), credit card penetration is only in single digits. This low credit card penetration accompanied by low GDP per capita means that in-app purchase via OEM app stores would not be a viable monetization model in emerging markets. Users in these markets just do not have the billing mechanism to pay for apps.

2．料金請求の課題を克服する

先進国市場とは異なり、新興国市場（アジア諸国の大部分がそうである）では独特の課題を抱えている。東南アジア諸国全域のモバイル普及率は100％以上（情報ソース：BMIのQ2 2012とPwC Analysis）なのだが、クレジットカードの普及率はわずか1桁台。このクレジットカードの普及率の低さに、１人あたりの国内総生産の低さも加わり、OEMのアプリストアを通じたアプリ内購入は新興国市場では現実的に可能なマネタイズモデルとはならないだろう。これらの市場のユーザーには、アプリにお金を払うための料金請求メカニズムがないのだから。

To overcome this fundamental challenge of enabling users to transact for apps in a hassle free manner, it’s imperative that developers collaborate with mobile telcos and plug into their billing so that users can purchase from the app store utilizing their prepaid balance or postpaid bill.

この基本的な問題を克服し、ユーザーに手軽にアプリの利用料金が払えるようにするには、デベロッパーがモバイル通信企業と提携しアプリ利用料金をモバイル通信企業の請求書に組み込むことが不可欠だ。そうすることで、ユーザーはモバイルのプレイペード残金や請求書による後払いを利用しアプリストアで買い物ができるようになる。

Rule 3: Going beyond traditional monetization models

App developers need to have an inclusive monetization model for a successful app strategy – one that targets users which are willing to pay for apps (to upgrade features, remove ads, etc) and also consider users (primarily from emerging markets) who prefer free app downloads. A blend of these two will give app developers the best results in terms of reach and revenues. The ideal model is to allow users to download for free – yes, freemium – and start monetizing them via ads. At the same time, allow users who want a premium experience to upgrade within the free app itself.

3．従来のマネタイズモデルを越える

アプリのデベロッパーは理想的なアプリ戦略のために包括的なマネタイズモデルと持つ必要がある。理想的なアプリ戦略とは、アプリ（をアップグレードをしたり、広告表示をなくしたりすること）に積極的に料金を払おうとするユーザーにターゲットを絞ると同時に、無料アプリのダウンロードを好むユーザー（主に新興国市場）にも配慮するというものだ。これらを合わせ持った戦略によって、アプリのデベロッパーはユーザー獲得数と収益という面で最善の結果をえることになる。この理想的なモデルによって、ユーザーはアプリを無料でダウンロードができ （そう、フリーミアム） 、デベロッパーは広告を通じマネタイズを始めることができる。と同時に、プレミアム体験を望むユーザーはその無料アプリ内でアップグレードができる。

In this manner the developer gets access to a wide number of users for the app who get monetized via ads and also makes additional revenue from the users who will pay to upgrade.

そうすることで、デベロッパーはアプリ内の広告でマネタイズする幅広い数多くのユーザーにアクセスすることができ、アップグレードにお金を払うユーザーからもさらに収益を得ることができる。

Rule 4 : Choosing the right ad mediation platform

App developers need to be cognizant of the fact that apps do not possess the same level of flexibility as websites. Once an app is downloaded, the developer is at the users’ mercy for app updates. So if a developer just puts one SDK in their app and it does not monetize well, he is stuck with it. As a result, it is advisable for developers to use a server-side ad mediation platform that gives them choice and control. This platform should also give them an option to add or edit ad networks and generate revenue from multiple ad networks of their preference.

4．適切な広告業者のプラットフォームを選ぶ

アプリのデベロッパーは、アプリにはウェブサイトと同じレベルの柔軟性がないことを認識する必要がある。いったんアプリがダウンロードされると、アプリのアップデートはユーザー次第となる。だから、デベロッパーがアプリに1つのSDKを入れるだけでは、マネタイズが上手かず、行き詰まってしまう。なので、デベロッパーが選択もでき管理もできるサーバーサイドで広告業者のプラットフォームを利用することをお勧めする。このプラットフォームは、広告ネットワークを追加／編集したり、好みの複数の広告ネットワークから収入を得ることのできるオプションも提供しているはずだ。

At the same time, they need to also get an option to get back fill from a wide range of other ad networks to ensure a high fill rate without the hassle of setting up each individually. Developers should also be able to run cross promotional house ads as it will help them ramp up the next app quickly, while delivering powerful eCPM optimization.

These four golden rules should put you on the path to higher revenues from your apps.

Chinese City Launches Mobile Taxi App for Easy Cab Pickups

Booking a cab in China used to require making a phone call. Actually, in most cities, it still does. But if a new mobile initiative in Chongqing catches on, smartphone users nationwide could soon be booking taxis directly via smartphone apps — for a 3 RMB surcharge, of course.

中国でタクシーを予約するには電話をしなければならなかった。実際には、今も中国のほとんどの都市でそうだ。だが、重慶で行われている新しいモバイルの取組みがうまく行けば、中国全土のスマートフォンユーザーがスマートフォンを使って直接タクシーを予約できるようになる日も遠くないだろう。もちろん、追加料金の3元を払わなければならないが。

The Chongqing project, which has already gone into effect, works like this: users go to an official Chongqing transportation site to download an app onto their Android phones (iOS and Windows Phone versions of the app are coming soon). After opening it and registering for an account, they can open it to view their location on a map, and hit the “call a cab” to fill in information and hail a cab to their location. There’s no guarantee of how soon the cab will get there — there’s no accounting for traffic, after all — but impatient passengers can even track the real-time progress of the cab headed to their location via the app’s map.

すでに始まっている重慶プロジェクトの利用方法はこうだ。ユーザーは重慶市道路運輸管理局のオフィシャルサイトにアクセスし、Android携帯にアプリをダウンロードする（iOS版、Windowsフォン版もまもなくローンチ予定）。ダウンロードしたアプリを開いてアカウント登録をしたら、アプリを開いてユ自分の現在地を地図上で見ることができる。その後、「タクシーを呼ぶ」ボタンを押し、情報を入力して自分の現在地にタクシーを呼ぶ。タクシーが来るまでどのくらいかかるかは保証されていない（つまり、道路状況にもよるからだ）が、せっかちな人はタクシーがどこまで来ているのかを同アプリの地図上でリアルタイムの状況を追跡することもできる。

Once the cab has picked them up, they enter the last four digits of their phone number into a device in the cab that confirms the transaction. Information about the trip is then stored in the app, so that if something happens — for example, if a passenger leaves something in the cab by accident — they can check the app for information about the cab’s plate number and company so that they can contact them and get the lost items back easily.

タクシーに乗ったら、ユーザーは車内にあるデバイスに自分の電話番号の下4桁を入力し、予約したタクシーに乗ったことを確認する。その後、乗車に関する情報がアプリに保管され、もし何かがあった時、例えば、車内に何か忘れ物をした時などは、タクシーのナンバーやタクシー会社の情報をアプリでチェックできるので、ユーザーは連絡をして忘れ物を容易に取り戻すことができる。

The app also has some other convenient features — and foreign visitors to Chongqing will be pleased to know that it has an option to use English — but the one thing it seems to be lacking right now is a mobile payment option. While I like the idea of being able to book a cab by smartphone, it would be great to be able to pay via smartphone too, especially for those awkward times when you’ve taken a 15 RMB cab ride but you only have 100 RMB notes. (Customers will be able to use their IC Transit cards to pay, but it would be more convenient if they could also use online banking services like Alipay).

同アプリには他にも便利な機能がいくつかある。重慶を訪れる外国人はこのアプリに英語機能があると知れば嬉しいだろう。だが、今欠けていると思われる機能の１つはモバイル決済だ。スマートフォンを使ってタクシーを予約できるというアイデアは気に入っているが、スマートフォンで支払いもできれば素晴らしいと思う。タクシー料金が15元なのに100元札しか持ち合わせていない時などにモバイル決済機能があれば本当に便利だ。（乗客はIC交通カードを使って支払いもできるが、Alipayなどのオンライン銀行決済サービスも利用できればさらに便利だろう。）
