With One New App, Every Sina Weibo Post Can Be Easily Translated into English

A couple of months ago we previewed the creation of a new kind of third-party app for Sina Weibo – one that would translate the mostly Chinese content posted to the service into English. That would make the lively, Twitter-esque Weibo a lot more accessible to people who can’t speak Chinese. Well, today that app, called Surround App, has actually launched, so we can finally test it out.

Surround App is free and allows one-click machine translation of any Weibo post from someone you follow. In addition, it gives you a full English UI for the most common Weibo functions, like making retweets and comments. The Hong Kong startup admits that many features are omitted in this beta, with things like translation of comments, slang translation, image uploading, and paid-for human translations all coming at a later date. Here’s the current beta that I’ve been playing with:

There are a few confusing aspects to the new beta. What looks like the retweet/repost button (pictured above) is actually for comments, and what’s apparently a refresh icon actually serves to repost the content. It’s not made very clear how to activate the translation – it turns out you need to hit that arrow button in the bottom-left of the app. Hopefully the icons will be rethought. If it sounds like I’m being too tough on a free app, that’s just because I’m keen for it to be good as it could prove so useful for many people.

Co-founder Jeffrey Broer previously told my colleague that the concept was born of his own frustration at not being able to understand “all these fascinating people online that I want to follow”. The team has received about US$15,000 in seed funding, plus office space and technical guidance, from HK Accelerator.

Surround App is now in Google Play for Android users, but the iPhone version hasn’t yet shown up in iTunes.

Zalora Launches iOS App in Southeast Asia Today, Already Top App in 5 Countries

For shopaholics and fans of Zalora, here’s a piece of news that will probably further strain your pockets. Zalora today officially launched its iOS app, and now you can shop for clothes or shoes even while on-the-go.

There are currently over 500 brands and 15,000 products listed on the new fashion e-store app. Users can receive push notifications on the new items and flash sales that Zalora has, and choose from multiple payment methods such as credit cards, PayPal, and cash-on-delivery. The user interface looks pretty and is optimized for the iPhone 5 too.

買い物が大好きな人とZaloraのファンにとって、さらに懐が寒くなりそうなニュースを紹介しよう。Zaloraが本日、iOSアプリを正式にローンチした。これで、外出中でも服や靴をオンラインで購入できるようになった。

Zaloraは現在、500以上のブランド商品15,000アイテムをこの新しいiOSアプリに掲載している。ユーザーはZaloraが提供する新アイテムやタイムセールに関するプッシュ通知を受け取ることができ、支払いもクレジットカード、PayPal、代引きなどの複数の決済方法から選択できる。ユーザーインターフェースは見ためも良く、iPhone 5向けに最適化もされている。

Unfortunately, the app is not available on Android yet, despite the growing number of Android users within the region. The reason for the initial push on the iOS platform, according to Zalora, is that most of its mobile shoppers are on the iOS platform. For countries with the highest mobile traffic, Zalora has twice as many shoppers on iOS than on Android.

But of course, Zalora is currently proposing to its Germany office to develop an Android app. Other platforms, such as BlackBerry or Windows, are not even in the pipeline yet.

Vietnamese Startup Triip Crowdsources For the Best Tour Guides in Asia

I’m a big fan of collaborative consumption startups like Airbnb, Zipcar, and Coursera because of their disruptive potential in incumbent markets – and especially the potential to open up new experiences for consumers. Triip is one such company in the tourism space, allowing anybody with a tour idea to create their own package and sell to interested tourists.

私は、AirbnbやZipcar、Courseraなどの集団消費サービスを提供するスタートアップが大好きだ。その理由は、既存の市場に大きな変革をもたらす可能性があることと——そして、特に、新しいことを経験するチャンスを消費者にもたらすからだ。Triipもそんなスタートアップの1つで、観光ビジネスに取り組んでいる。Tiipでは、誰もが独自のツアープランを作り、興味のある観光客にそのプランを販売することができる。

How Triip began

The idea actually started with Lam Ha, one of the Triip co-founders, back when she was in university and started a student group called Saigon Hotpot. The group of English-savvy students would take tourists around town and show them the significant sights around Ho Chi Minh city while also getting a chance to practice English with foreigners. The students did it pro-bono and within four years it shot up to the top spot of things to do on Tripadvisor. After university, slowly the idea of turning this into a viable business model made more sense.

With its team of nine – five of them being co-founders – they’ve slowly built up Triip into its current beta version. Today, Triip has approved 86 total tours. But being in beta and with no spending on marketing so far, only seven people have taken tours so far. This will certainly change when Triip goes out of beta in June as well as releases an iPhone app.

Elaborating more on the future strategy, Ha says:

We’re really focused on excellent customers service at this point, so we’re going to release Triipbook in the next few weeks, which teaches Triip creators how to create excellent tours. We’ve done workshops in Vietnam and Cambodia and saw that potential creators were really excited to create tours but had trouble coming up with them.

Already, Triip has a lot of very unique tours that you won’t find in traditional holiday packages. There are tours on Zen in Saigonnother on sand painting, and crowd-pleasers like a ride through the Sapa mountains with local Hmong children. Ha sees tours like these as central to Triip’s competitive advantages:

Although professional tour guides will offer very smooth and professional tours, it’s young people who have specific passions for their country or city that bring out really unique tours like our sand painting tour.

How it works

Generally, the way it works is someone like you or me submits a tour that we think is interesting to Triip. The Triip moderators will check if the tour violates any of their policies (Triip has rejected about 10 to 12 tours already due to such violations). Then the potential customers, aka tourists, will pay Triip for the tour. This money will be held by Triip until after the tour is finished and the customer is satisfied. After this, Triip distributes 90 percent of the earnings to the tour guide and keeps 10 percent.

Triipのしくみはこうだ。まず、Triipが面白いと思いそうなツアーを提出する。すると、Triipの監修者がそのツアーの中に同社の方針にそぐわないものがあるかどうかをチェックする（同社はこの理由で、すでに申請された12件のツアーのうち10件ほどを却下している）。それから、見込み客（つまり、観光客）がツアーの料金をTriipに支払う。この料金はツアーが完了し顧客が満足したことが分かるまでTriipが預かり、ツアーが無事完了すれば、料金の90％がガイドに支払われ、残りの10％がTriipの取り分となる。

Triip creators can choose the days they are available to do a tour, how much time each tour is, and how much a tour costs. Triip is also developing a service where tourists can actually request a tour from tour guides. There was one special case where some tourists wanted to see inside schools, and surprisingly a tour guide popped up that took them around middle and high schools in Ho Chi Minh city.

Triipのツアークリエーター達は、ツアーを実行できる日にちや、各ツアーの所要時間、そして料金を設定することができる。また、Triipは観光客がツアーガイドが提供するツアーをリクエストできるというサービスも開発中だ。実際、学校内を見学したいという観光客からの特別なリクエストが過去に1件あり、驚くことに、あるツアーガイドが名乗り出て、その観光客にホーチミンシティーにある中学校と高校を見せてまわったことがある。

Future plans

At the end of May, Triip’s founders plan to put Triip up on Indiegogo for crowdfunding and marketing, and in June they’ll be coming out of beta – plus there’s the upcoming iPhone app called WikiTriip. The app, which takes data from Wiki Vonyage, will allow users to search for information about places they are visiting and also will be data crawled by Triip to see what users are interested in visiting when traveling. This data will be used to suggest and design tours for travelers.

Currently, Triip operates in six countries including Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Triipは現在、ベトナム、ミャンマー、ラオス、カンボジア、タイ、インドネシアの6か国でサービスを展開している。

AngelHack Comes to Asia, Sees Potential in Singapore and South Korea, Offers Readers Free Tickets

AngelHack will be organizing over 100 hackathons and aims to aggregate over 15,000 developers in more than 50 cities. This is its first step into Asia, which the team had originally planned for the last quarter of the year. For countries in Asia, Greg sees potential in cities such as Seoul and Singapore. Of course, this is subject to a case-by-base basis once the judging has taken place.
