The startup wants to help fix that in one very specific industry – healthcare and pharmaceuticals. It’s focusing on Japan and China to give physicians and clinical scientists English courses that cover their industry and day-to-day work in detail. It uses a mix of text and videos. So far there are 2,000 videos and about 82,000 articles in English with human translations in Chinese and Japanese to help people understand the topic at hand.

Citrix and Nimble Collective are building a cloud platform that will empower animators to more easily develop and distribute their ideas. With all production capabilities hosted in a secure cloud environment, animators will be able to spend more time creating instead of worrying about the endless hassles of managing complex and costly infrastructure, Howse said.

Howse started Nimble Collective with Rex Grignon, chief creative officer and former head of character animation at Dreamworks Animation for blockbuster films including the Madagascar series, Antz, and Shrek. Those films have generated more than $4 billion at the box office.

Nimble Collective aims to democratize computer animation videos

Computer animation professionals have learned to deal with how difficult it is to create and publisher animated work. But the demand for animation videos — a $90 billion content market, according to Markets & Markets research — has never been greater.

Tapping the cloud, Nimble Collective has formed to make it easier to create and distribute videos produced by the animation community. It has also raised $1 million in seed funding, and it is announcing today a strategic partnership with Citrix to deliver its services via the cloud.

“The animation content market generates $90 billion annually, but is still dominated by studios because they can afford expensive technology and tap large-scale budgets,” said Howse. “However, several key trends are driving change — cloud-enabled application streaming, along with direct-to-consumer video networks democratize content development and distribution that until now would cost individuals and small teams millions of dollars to set up.”

58.com and Ganji Confirm Merger: Consolidation of Chinese Internet Companies Continues

New York-listed Chinese classified service 58.com has agreed to acquire a 43.2 percent stake in its arch-rival Ganji.com by issuing around 34 million shares and with US$412.2 million in cash. This merger has terminated the decade-long battle between the two largest classified sites in China, creating an Internet conglomerate with a market cap of over US$10 billion.

According to third-party data, 58.com and Ganji accounts for 40.6% and 33.4% of market share respectively in the local lifestyle category in 2014, followed by Baixing, which represents a 16% share.

FlexPV, the electric-powered motorized wheel you can slap on anything like a bicycle or a skateboard and which we looked at a few months back, today hits Kickstarter.

The team is seeking to raise US$20,000 for the open source electric “vehicle” – the Kickstarter page is here. US$99 secures buyers one FlexPV motor/wheel along with universal brackets so you can Tesla-ify your bike, buggy, or rollerblades. Or perhaps a shopping cart – imagine that.

Machine learning is coming into a golden age, and with it we’re seeing an awakening of possibilities formerly reserved for science fiction.

Machine learning (ML) is a computer’s way of learning from examples, and it’s one of the most useful tools we have for the construction of artificial intelligence (AI). It begins with the design of an algorithm that learns from collected data, creating machines that in most cases become smarter as data volumes intensify.

Heavily- used applications that have emerged with ML at their core include recommendation systems like those from Netflix and Amazon, face recognition technology as seen in Facebook, email spam filters like those from Google and Microsoft, and speech recognition systems such as Siri.

While the depth of advancement is unknown, what we can say with high certainty is that development in this field in the past five years will be nothing compared to what we’re going to see in the five years to come. Based on machine learning’s current state, here are four predictions of what we could see in the near future:

It’s not just new pictures that will become recognizable either, but the entire history of digitized images and video footage. This will massively change how these assets are located and shared online.

Business, in particular, stands to benefit enormously from the advancement here, with tech giants such as Google and Microsoft already taking the necessary steps to build such tools, making the need for a premium multilingual workforce obsolete.

Xiaomi now has 100 million users of its Android-based mobile OS

Upstart Chinese phone maker Xiaomi revealed today that its version of Android, called MIUI, now has 100 million users. Xiaomi’s MIUI includes an app store, cloud-based syncing to the company’s own Mi Cloud, and a host of adaptations that make it different to stock Android.

It’s still available for dozens of phone models.

Its growth has been especially quick in 2014. MIUI users doubled in the past eight months.

The highly customizable MIUI is an important part of what helped Xiaomi grow to 61 million phone sales in 2014. It’s also a way for Xiaomi to make money from its software, though Xiaomi has not provided recent revenues figures for its software ecosystem. The last time such a figure was provided in December 2013, Xiaomi was raking in $4.9 million from its MIUI-based services.

Figure 1, the Instagram for doctors, launches in India

Figure 1, a photo-sharing platform for healthcare professionals, is now available in India. The app enables healthcare professionals and students to connect, discuss, and share content related to the field of medicine. This is the first Asian market for the company.

The app, launched in 2013, is available in 48 countries and the images are viewed more than 1.5 million times a day, according to the company. The app is most popular with healthcare professionals in the US and the UK and Figure 1 hopes that the app will gain traction among India’s 2.3 million healthcare professionals.
