Vending Machine Operator Ubox Lands $85M USD Fresh Funding From Carlyle Group

China’s leading vending company Ubox has secured 530 million RMB ($85 million USD) in funding from Carlyle Group in exchange for an undisclosed stake. The investment was made through the Carlyle Beijing Partners Fund, an RMB fund the investment institution has established with the support of the Beijing government.

The financing is earmarked to expand Ubox’s vending machine network across the country, improve its digital advertising businesses, and develop more value-added services.

Founded in 2010, Ubox is a key player in China’s vending machine industry. In addition to traditional vending services, Ubox is known for its pioneering O2O efforts in operating interactive vending machines, which enables customers to make purchases through their mobile app and then pick goods from offline vending devices.
Ubox machines support multiple payment methods ranging from credit/debit cards, to more popular mobile payment options like Alipay or WeChat Payment. Not only from retail sales, the company also makes money through ads on its online platform.

Operated under a franchise model, Ubox runs more than 30,000 machines across 58 cities in locations like transit stations and shopping malls across China, according to the company.
“China’s vending machine market is still at an early stage of development, with great potential for growth. The industry has seen an accelerated pace of growth in recent years, driven by increasing disposable income, rising urban population density and consumers’ preference for convenient lifestyles.” said Eric Zhang, managing director of the Carlyle Asia buyout team.

The deal points to the interest from foreign funds in China. As of June 2015, Carlyle Group has invested a combined $6.3 billion USD in 81 projects in China. The Ubox deal comes on the heels of Carlyle’s investment in transportation company Shanghai ANE Logistics Ltd. and equipment leasing firm JIC Leasing Co Ltd.

Symantec: Spam falls below 50% of all email for the first time since 2003

Good news for all of us who still have to use email: spam rates are dropping! In fact, junk messages now account for just 49.7 percent of all emails.

The latest figure comes from security firm Symantec’s June 2015 Intelligence Report, which notes this is the first time in over a decade that the rate has fallen below 50 percent. The last time the company recorded a similar spam rate was back in September 2003, or almost 12 years ago.

More specifically, Symantec saw 704 billion email messages sent in June, of which 353 billion were classified as spam. At one of the peaks of the spam epidemic, in June 2009, 5.7 trillion of the 6.3 trillion messages sent were spam, according to past data from Symantec.

The report uses Symantec clients to extrapolate the figure, so the actual rate could be a bit higher or lower. That said, the spam rate appears to be dropping: Symantec’s spam number was 52.1 percent in April and 51.5 percent in May.

The decline of spam is usually attributed to legal prosecution against botnets (including by major tech companies like Microsoft), faster reaction times by network providers, improved blocking, and better filtering. The main goal is to make the business less lucrative: If you can slash profit margins for a spammer, you can slash spam itself.

This is great news for not just email users but companies that are dedicated to fighting spam. Their business isn’t going away anytime soon, but they are making progress.

スパムの減少は通常、ボットネットに対する（Microsoft社のような大テクノロージー企業によるものも含む）法的措置、ネットワークプロバイダーによる迅速な対応、ブロッキングの改善、そしてフィルタリングの改良のおかげとされる。主な目的は、スパム業をできるだけ儲からなくすることだ。スパム業者の利益を削ることができれば、スパム業者自体を減らすことができる。

Other findings in the report, which talks about not just spam but security overall, include:

・57.6 million new malware variants were created in June, up from 44.5 million pieces of malware created in May and 29.2 million in April.

・Ransomware attack has increased for the second month in a row and crypto-ransomware has reached its highest levels since December 2014.

The startup wants to help fix that in one very specific industry – healthcare and pharmaceuticals. It’s focusing on Japan and China to give physicians and clinical scientists English courses that cover their industry and day-to-day work in detail. It uses a mix of text and videos. So far there are 2,000 videos and about 82,000 articles in English with human translations in Chinese and Japanese to help people understand the topic at hand.

Nimble Collective aims to democratize computer animation videos

Computer animation professionals have learned to deal with how difficult it is to create and publisher animated work. But the demand for animation videos — a $90 billion content market, according to Markets & Markets research — has never been greater.

Tapping the cloud, Nimble Collective has formed to make it easier to create and distribute videos produced by the animation community. It has also raised $1 million in seed funding, and it is announcing today a strategic partnership with Citrix to deliver its services via the cloud.

“The animation content market generates $90 billion annually, but is still dominated by studios because they can afford expensive technology and tap large-scale budgets,” said Howse. “However, several key trends are driving change — cloud-enabled application streaming, along with direct-to-consumer video networks democratize content development and distribution that until now would cost individuals and small teams millions of dollars to set up.”

58.com and Ganji Confirm Merger: Consolidation of Chinese Internet Companies Continues

New York-listed Chinese classified service 58.com has agreed to acquire a 43.2 percent stake in its arch-rival Ganji.com by issuing around 34 million shares and with US$412.2 million in cash. This merger has terminated the decade-long battle between the two largest classified sites in China, creating an Internet conglomerate with a market cap of over US$10 billion.

The two companies will continue to operate independently, while two CEOs will run the joint company as co-CEOs.

According to third-party data, 58.com and Ganji accounts for 40.6% and 33.4% of market share respectively in the local lifestyle category in 2014, followed by Baixing, which represents a 16% share.
