Sina Weibo Launches Location Platform ‘Weibo Places’

In a move that, in retrospect, we’re surprised didn’t happen way sooner, Sina Weibo launched a new location service today. It’s called Weibo Places and it collects anything you’ve posted to Weibo with a Geotag, arranging your posts into a neat timeline with maps of each location. It also allows you to check in at specific locations, or search for new places to visit (which you can then mark as ‘want to visit’).

As is evident in the first image at the top of this article, the web app can’t locate you with any more accuracy than which city you’re in; since I live in Beijing, it’s telling me I’m smack dab in the center of the city at Tiananmen Square, which isn’t at all true. But if I try to check in via the web, it seems I can only select the listed places near that area, meaning that even if I wanted to check in from where I actually am, I couldn’t do it unless I was using a mobile phone with GPS.

But it seems Sina expects most users to be checking in via mobile apps anyway. In addition to the web app, Weibo Places is also compatible with a bunch of third-party mobile apps. Of course, it also works with any posts or photos you might add location data to in any of the official Sina Weibo mobile apps.

You can also see the locations of anyone you’re following, although of couse that’s only if they opted to add the location when they made the post to begin with. Thankfully, it doesn’t share your location with anyone unless you’ve already chosen to share it.

Anyway, this is a new service and we’re still figuring out the details. So, it appears, is Sina; as I was fooling around with the web app this afternoon I ran across a couple of strange errors: maps not loading properly, popup menus disappearing, etc. It could just be my connection, but I’m guessing that with a product this new, there are still a few bugs in the system. China Railway Ministry Site Accused of Cheating on Ticket Sales

If you’re riding a Chinese sleeper train, you should know that not all bunks are created equal. The top bunk? That’s for chumps. It’s difficult to get to, gets super hot at night, and there’s not enough headspace for you to sit up. The middle bunk (in hard sleeper cars only) is better, but requires an even more awkward climb. The bottom bunk is where it’s at; at ground level it is super convenient to get to, and it’s often a gathering place for travelers during the day so anyone sitting there is sure to meet some new friends.

Needless to say, our traveler suspected that his results weren’t random, and that the bottom bunk seats had been held in reserve or something. He wrote an open letter, which was then posted to anti-fraud muckraker Fang Zhouzi’s weibo account.

But there may not be foul play involved; 12306 has a history of being incredibly buggy, so that might well be what’s happening here.

Nikkei Business Publications to Hold Game Networking Jakarta

Nikkei BP (Nikkei Business Publications) is going to hold Game Networking Jakarta on May 28 at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta Ballroom. Nikkei BP, also the organizer of the annual Tokyo Game Show, said the goal of this networking event is to bridge the Indonesian and Japanese gaming companies, with a particular focus on the smartphone industry.

There has been a significant rise in social gaming in correspondence with the rise smartphones, and Japanese game developers are rushing to produce and create games, and they’re hiring too. Yet, there has been a shortage of domestic developers. And with that in mind Nikkei BP is trying to help Japanese gaming companies to make partnerships with Indonesian mobile and social game developers.

Tencent’s Group Messaging App Gets English Name, WeChat, Support for More Languages

Just as we’d heard was about to happen, Chinese social media giant Tencent (HKG:0700) has renamed its group messaging app, Weixin, as “WeChat” for international users. This comes in a new update to v4.0 for the iOS version – though not yet for Android or other platforms – which also adds support for Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Portuguese. The inclusion of many southeast Asian languages is surely significant, as we’ve heard Tencent execs say that they’re planning to focus on Indonesia, especially in terms of mobile internet.

Other new features in the globally-minded WeChat app include the ability to forward photos from one friend to another, add a star to favourite contacts, add a location to your messages, font size customization, and a streaming photo journal of your day’s highlights. Perhaps more significantly, there’s also the newly-added ‘Circles’ (pictured right) which seems to be copied from Google+ and which Tencent will also bring to its Chinese social networks, such as QQ.

Just last month, Tencent CEO Pony Ma said that Weixin – I mean, WeChat – had passed the 100 million user milestone, which makes it the biggest group messaging app in the world. Though we don’t know how many of those are active users.

WeChat opened up to international users late last year with an English version of the app, and the ability to register with a phone number via SMS in nearly every country.
