iTwin wins Singapore’s National Infocomm Award for Most Innovative Product or Service

iTwin has been awarded the National Infocomm Award in the ‘Most Innovative Product/Service’ category.

The award, which is Singapore’s highest accolade for infocomm innovation, was presented to iTwin by Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, minister for Information, Communications and the Arts at a gala dinner on 23rd October.

LifeSwap Is Airbnb for Careers

Entering the job market — let alone finding a job you love — can be daunting. A new startup called LifeSwap aims to ease the stresses of networking during the job search by coordinating career shadowing opportunities throughout the Bay Area.

Called the “Airbnb for careers,” LifeSwap allows users to connect with professionals in a specific job position or company and shadow them for a predetermined length of time, at a price set by the host. Current swaps range from shadowing a Ph.D. student to observing a henna tattoo artist, but the LifeSwap founders hope to provide experiences that educate professionals as they make career choices.

Japan’s GREE Ventures Looks Abroad for the Next Big Thing

We’ve written a lot about Japanese mobile social gaming company GREE (TYO:3632) quite recently, and it has been especially busy of late with with its $173.8 million purchase of Japanese game publisher Pokelabo. But GREE, in addition to its primary meal ticket of mobile social games, is also on the lookout for other exciting developments in the internet business.

日本のGREEベンチャー株式会社は次の大きな目標を海外に見据えている。

私たちは日本の携帯ソーシャルゲーム会社のGREE(TYO:3632)の記事をたくさん書いてきた。最近では日本のゲーム会社のポケラボを1億7千3百80万ドルで買収した事を大きく取り上げた。だがGREEは携帯ソーシャルゲームの収入源の他にも、さらにエキサイティングなインターネットビジネスの発展に関心を持っている。

It is doing so via its investment arm, GREE Ventures, which is particularly interested in Southeast Asia these days. I had a chance to speak with the director of GREE Ventures’ investment office, Tatsuo Tsutsumi, recently in Tokyo, to find out a little bit more about the group, as well as its plans for the future [1].

This year has already seen GREE Ventures invest in Indonesian startups Price Area and Bukalapak. Tsutsumi tells me that their main focus moving forward will be the Southeast Asia region, with continued emphasis on Indonesian startups:

More specifically, the 500-character comes from the fact that 140 characters in Chinese is as expressive as 500 characters in English. Compared to Twitter, weibo has a structured (e.g., nested dialogs) + media-rich (easy to enjoy photo/video/music without leaving the page) approach, which made it more approachable for the many amateur netizens in China. Finally, in a country where traditional media lacks of brand and expressiveness, weibo is particularly welcome as a breath of fresh air.

とりわけ、500文字は140文字の中国語は500文字の英語に相当するという事実に由来している。ツイッターと比較して、微博は構造的であり、(例えばダイアログのツリー)メディアリッチであり、(微博へ簡単に写真や動画や音楽をアップする事が可能)中国のネチズンがより親しみやすいものになっている。最終的に国内の既存のメディアのブランド力と表現力は低下し、とりわけ、微博は新風を吹き込んでいるとして歓迎されている。

Weibo posts can get deleted, but almost all the time you can say almost anything you’d like, and what you say could be heard by millions. That’s more freedom of speech than ever enjoyed by the Chinese people.

微博の投稿は削除可能だが、何時でも好きなことを発言でき、その発言は数百万の人々に知られる事になる。中国の人々はかつてない発言の自由を満喫している。

Fusing Photos and Voice, PaPa is the Perfect Social App (or Just Nonsense)

Having resisted the temptation to use the tired “China’s something something” format for the headline, I’m going to have to use it in the first paragraph. Here goes. The founder of China’s Tumblr invests in a Path clone. Yes, Xu Zhaojun, the founder of Diandian, one of China’s coolest lite-blogging services, has said that he has personally invested in a very new social app called PaPa . That makes it an app to watch.

見出しに「中国のなんたらかんたら」という陳腐な体裁を使いたい衝動に抗おうとしても、やはり、それを最初の段落で使わざる負えないだろう。よし、始めよう。中国のTumblrの創設者はそのクローンと呼べるものに投資した。そう、中国で最もクールなシミニブログサービスの一つであるDiandianの創設者であるXu Xhaojin氏がPaPaというできたてのソーシャルアプリに投資すると発言した。この発言はPaPaへの注目を集めた。

Meanwhile, Gani was highlighting his company’s focus on the B2B market, due to his difficult experience in executing B2C businesses outside Jakarta. “Only 20 percent of Indonesians have bank accounts and 9 percent own credit cards,” he reveals. He wishes that the country had more players offering payment solutions, which will boost his company’s transactions further.
