ConnectCubed Makes Hiring For the Financial Sector More Fun

ConnectCubed is a Hong Kong based startup that hopes to make hiring for Wall Street fun, meritocratic, and scientific. The bulk of its users are finance undergrads who are looking for jobs. Their skills are accessed mainly through games. On ConnectCubed, members create profiles and play assessment games to build and showcase their finance skills. So far there are two games, one that follows a quiz format and another one is a trading simulator.

Michael Tanenbaum, co-founder of ConnectCubed told me that his team is made of mainly game designers. He himself is one too but he also has a financial background. He notes that their goal is “to make epistemic gaming (games for assessment) actually fun.” Besides its digital efforts, ConnectCubed also recruits students though outreach and campus events to universities around the world. Tanennaum elaborates:

Chinese Internet Giant Tencent Eyes Indonesia Market

CyberAgent’s Net Impact Jakarta conference yesterday had a fun mixture of Japanese, Vietnam, and Chinese Internet companies. Among them was Tencent, whereby Sean Zhang, director of Tencent’s Mobile Global division, shared some background information about Tencent and also briefly spoke on the company’s plans to engage the Indonesian market.

Yes, you read that right. Tencent (HKG:0700) has set its eyes on Indonesia. In fact, Zhang shared on stage that Tencent already has a team of ten in Indonesia and is looking to hire more as it expands its operations.

Smartly, Tencent noted that Indonesia is very much a mobile centric nation. The Chinese internet giant is thus planning to introduce the QQ browser (we reviewed the mac version here) and also a Whatsapp-like mobile app, Qute, to the Indonesia market.

I was actually puzzled why Tencent chose to bring in Qute rather than Weixin, a popular group messaging app in China, owned by Tencent. I threw that question during Q&A and got an interesting answer.

テンセントが手堅くも指摘しているのは、インドネシアがかなりモバイル中心の国であるということだ。だから、この中国の巨大インターネット企業はQQブラウザー（これのマック版についてはすでにレビューをお届けしているが）やワッツアップのような携帯アプリ、Quteをインドネシア市場に導入する予定である。

実際、私が疑問に感じたのが、なぜテンセントは中国国内で人気のグループメッセンジャーアプリである同社のWeixinではなく、Quteを導入しようと決定したのかという点だった。質疑応答の時間にこの疑問を投げかけたところ、面白い回答が得られた。

Zhang explained that Weixin is mainly used by high-end smartphone users who are on Android or iPhones. While Qute can be used for feature phone users, which constitutes a large group of people in Indonesia, where they can enjoy group messaging services even without data plans. That group messaging app resembles Pinch, a solution developed by Affle.

It is a pity that we couldn’t find more time with Zhang to learn more details on Tencent’s plan in Indonesia. But both of us agreed to meet again soon. Coincidentally (or unfortunately for him), we are staying in the same apartment complex in Jakarta which makes meeting up way easier! Stay tuned!

残念だったのは、テンセントのインドネシア国内における事業計画についてZhangからはそれ以上詳しくは聞けなかったことだ。でも、Zhangと私はすぐに再会することで約束した。偶然なことに（彼にとっては不幸なことだが）、我々二人はジャカルタの同じ住居内に滞在することになっているので、落ち合うのは容易だ。乞うご期待！

We wrapped up Startup Asia Singapore just over a month ago. The response has been great, and it motivates us to keep moving and building. At the end of Startup Asia Singapore, I said that we would be announcing our next city very soon. And here it is.

That city is Jakarta, Indonesia. Startup Asia Jakarta will be held on June 7 and 8.

In fact, some local friends tell me that Startup Asia Jakarta is the first international startup conference ever held in Indonesia. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but we’re delighted to go there in any case. Our team has also been learning a lot from our Indonesian friends. It has been a humbling experience. The people in Jakarta are amazingly friendly and of course Indonesia is oozing with tech potential. And the world is watching.

Over the last four weeks, we’ve had some team members traveling back and forth to Jakarta to lay the foundation for this event. The reason we chose Jakarta is mainly because of demand. Quite a few friends from Indonesia visited our Startup Asia Singapore conference and many wanted it to be held in Jakarta.

Our Jakarta conference will be held at the Upperroom Jakarta, a gorgeous conference and exhibition space located in the heart of Jakarta. The exhibition hall for startups and sponsors will be at least twice as large as the one we had in Singapore. You can also expect a larger crowd, and a good mix of local and international participants. For the Jakarta conference, we will also run a 30-hour Hackathon focusing on mobile hacks. Details of the Hackathon will be released at a later date.

Startup Arena

Our event is created for entrepreneurs. So we’re putting a huge focus on Startup Arena, where a group of selected startups across Asia will battle for US$10,000.

In the four weeks following our Singapore event, we learned that two startups who competed at Arena have already received fundings, and there are more to be announced soon apparently. While we can’t claim any credit for their successes, we do like to think that Arena is a great springboard for startups in Asia. Alipay Hits 30 Million Mobile Downloads, Gets Most Luvvin’ on Android

China’s biggest online payment platform, Alipay, has said that its cross-platform mobile apps have been downloaded just over 30 million times in total. The company also revealed that it has seen transactions in these apps go up six-fold, compared to the previous year, as more people use the Alipay apps to pay for things on-the-go or just to deal with their accounts.

Alibaba-owned Alipay also stated that it sees 60,000 new mobile app activations per day. But it’s not clear precisely how many new users it’s getting on mobile, or how many can be counted as regular users.
