Tencent runs WeChat, the popular messaging app that expanded into social gaming in August last year. Though WeChat can lay claim to nearly half a billion active users, its social gaming platform is more modest in size, mostly populated by Tencent-published games. The first foreign-made game to hit WeChat arrived a year after the platform’s launch when a special WeChat edition of Candy Crush Saga launched in China.

The Yodo1 and KTplay team emphasize that its own tech is a lot easier for game developers to access, in contrast to the special deal needed to get a game onto the social gaming elements of messaging apps like WeChat or Line.

Alibaba has its own – albeit struggling – messaging app in the form of Laiwang. That has also rolled out social games and could see a much-needed boost from its new joint venture

On the other hand, it’s certainly possible. Puzzle & Dragons was one of the most popular and profitable mobile games in the history of Japan, and it did quite well in the United States too. Tencent has a history of successfully importing popular foreign games – even older ones. In fact, China’s top 3 PC games are all foreign imports published in China by Tencent, and all of them are more than five years old. Tencent is a company that has proved itself good at spotting overseas success and duplicating that success in the Chinese gaming market. Even at times when it seems like it has arrived at the party a little late.

So, Puzzle & Dragons‘ move to the Middle Kingdom may not be quite as sure a thing as some pundits are suggesting. That doesn’t mean I’d bet against it, though. 2015 may be a little late for Puzzle & Dragons to finally reach China’s shores, but this time I suspect it will be a case of better late than never.

WeChat launches MojiMe; wants to put your face on emoji stickers

MojiMe blurs the lines between selfies and emojis (or stickers), but will it catch on? Tencent is betting yes

WeChat today launched what it hopes will become the ‘newest social craze’ — its customised and animated emojis (or stickers) app MojiMe, which allows users to insert their face into a selection of cute emojis and then share with friends on WeChat.

The Tencent-owned messaging platform is trying to differentiate itself in the growingly populated selfie and stickers app landscape.

Being a Chinese company, Tencent will be well aware of the popularity of emoji stickers in Asia. But the release is also a nod at competition in the selfie space: ‘move over selfies’, its statement reads.

“At WeChat, we strive to connect people and innovate to take traditional forms of communication to the next level,” Poshu Yeung, Vice President of International Business Group, Tencent, told e27.

中国企業として、Tencentはアジアにおける絵文字ステッカーの人気に十分に気づくことになるだろう。しかし、このリリースはセルフィー分野における競争に参入することも意味する。Tencentは「セルフィーを追い込め」と声明しているといえる。

Differentiating in the space is becoming key, and bringing a new twist to an old concept to keep users hooked is more important than ever as smaller developers try to lure them away with their own ideas.

Tencent plans to support 100 startups over the next 3 years, but not with money

If you’re a successful Chinese mobile startup, I’ve got some good news: Tencent wants to help you. As part of a recent event celebrating the 5.0 release of its mobile app platform Yingyongbao, the company has announced what it calls its “double-hundred plan.”

According to Tencent social media services group VP Lin Yongtao, the double-hundred plan stipulates that over the next three years, Tencent will direct 10 billion user visits to 100 Chinese startups via its open platform, although the startups in question must be valued at RMB 100 million (US$16 million) or more.

Tencent Showcases WeChat-Connected Hardware

Four months ago, WeChat released an API (application programming interface) for connected hardware to develop applications running off WeChat public accounts. Recently WeChat decided to accept requests not only from established businesses but also from individual hardware developers. The integration process for these apps takes just two weeks to complete, according to WeChat.

WeChat hardware integration allows control over these products through WeChat public accounts and social features, taking advantage of the dominant mobile social service in China.

How Indonesia’s Tokopedia can become the next Alibaba

Tokopedia surprised everyone yesterday when it set the record for the largest round of funding in Indonesian startup history. Moments after the news broke of the US$100 million investment from SoftBank and Sequoia Capital, Jakarta’s social media lit up with questions and comments as Tokopedia came under the spotlight.

インドネシアのTokopediaはどうすれば次のアリババとなれるか

Tokopediaは昨日、インドネシアのスタートアップの歴史の中で一度のファンディングとして最高額の記録を作り、人々を驚愕させた。ソフトバンクとSequoia Capitalが１億ドルを出資したというニュースが伝えられた瞬間から、ジャカルタのソーシャルメディアは数々の質問やコメントで同社を華々しく浮き立たせ、まるでTokopediaにスポットライトが当てられたかのようだった。

But this big news leaves a lot of room for speculation. There are two questions that the Indonesian tech scene is sure to be asking itself right now. First, does this mean Indonesia’s internet market will see growth comparable to those of China or India? Second, do SoftBank and Sequoia aim to replicate the story of Alibaba with Tokopedia? If so, here are some points to consider.

しかし、このニュースには考察の余地が少なからずある。インドネシアの技術シーンが今すぐに知りたいと思っているにちがいないのは、次のふたつの疑問である。まず、このことは、インドネシアのインターネット・マーケットが中国やインドのマーケットに比肩しうるほど成長するということを意味しているのかどうかということである。第二に、ソフトバンクやSequoia社がTokopediaにアリババのストーリーをなぞらせること目的としているか、という疑問である。もしそうだとすれば、考慮しなければならない点がいくつかある。

The company’s business model will likely diversify

At the moment, Tokopedia’s business model is only consumer-to-consumer (C2C), which means it’s a marketplace made up of ordinary people selling stuff. This is the same model as Alibaba’s Taobao, which beat Ebay in China and went on to become China’s top ecommerce site. But several years later, Alibaba diversified to business-to-consumer (B2C) sales, providing medium-sized business and major brands a place to open a virtual storefront with the launch of Tmall.

In the short term, Tokopedia could aim to become the Indonesian equivalent of Taobao. Alexa named Taobao one of the world’s top 10 most visited websites last year after its millions of merchants posted 760 million product listings.

In keeping with Tokopedia CEO William Tanuwijaya’s vision, however, it’s likely that he will want to diversify the company and open it up to serve as many buyers as possible. Inspired by Alibaba’s Jack Ma, this would likely mean incorporating B2C (and maybe even business-to-business) options into Tokopedia’s marketplace in the long-run, or even launching a spin-off site (like Tmall) dedicated to brands.

短期的には、TokopediaはインドネシアにおけるTaobaoになることを視野に入れられるだろう。昨年、数百万の出品者が７億６０００万もの商品を掲載したとき、TaobaoはAlexaによって世界で最も訪問者が多いサイトのトップ１０に入ると認定された。

B2C ecommerce stores are arguably the future, as we mostly buy things from big businesses and major brands. That means C2C stores will eventually shrink until they find a niche size in the market – like shopping malls versus mom-and-pop shops in developed nations. That’s happening in China, an already quite mature ecommerce market, as Tmall grows and Taobao contracts. B2C sites can also mean more revenue and stronger profit for the ecommerce sites that run such open platforms for virtual stores.

Tokopedia will start to think globally

Indonesia is the fourth most populated country in the world with more than 250 million people and an internet penetration of roughly 20 percent. The archipelago’s ecommerce sales stand at an estimated US$1-3 billion per year at present, according to The Financial Times, which also projects the country to reach US$10 billion in online spending by the end of 2015 (although this projection was made before Tokopedia’s annoucement). It claims Indonesia’s ecommerce market is fast becoming one of Asia’s most attractive destinations for investors. The data is pretty interesting, but let’s take a moment to compare Indonesia’s local market to those in China and India.

hello. i received the reel very quickly. thank you. i was examining the reel to make sure it was in good shape, and i found there were metal shavings under the handle assembly (see attached picture) - these should not be there and indicate something faulty. also, it is missing the # 12 spacer (see attached picture of the reel diagram) and the handle is therefore wobbly and not very secure. i am going to try to fix this with a spacer from one of my older reels. if i cannot fix this, i will need to return it for a refund. thank you.
