When you realize it’s time to discuss a seed extension with your investors, make sure to do your homework. Asking for a seed extension means you underestimated the challenges in your market, need more time in a more challenging Series A climate, or both. Whatever the case, be sure that your new plan will allow you to hit the milestones required for a proper Series A. Think of seed extensions the way you would have asked a professor for an extension on a term paper. If you’re a good student with a compelling excuse, you may get one break — but you’ll rarely get two.

Why do founders need lifelines?

The emergence of this new financing round is the result of a couple of phenomena. First is the sheer growth in the number of early stage/seed sector of funds. When Founder Collective started in 2009, there were a couple of institutional seed funds. Today there are hundreds. As a result, there’s a lot of early stage money chasing startups with valuations in the $5-12 million range.

In French schools, which have struggled at times to effectively teach English, the robots would provide extra help for teachers and motivation for students. There are also plans to develop a French curriculum with robots to help autistic children learn social skills and empathy.

Naturally, in a country like France, which at times has a contentious relationship with innovation, the founders of the company are proceeding with some caution. But in the long run, they believe this new technology could have a positive impact on France, and eventually the world.

“This is something we think can be used to reach older people and younger people as well,” said Faissal Houhou, who cofounded RoboCARE with Dominique Blasco. “And we think France is ready for something like this.”

As the founders have been touring with their robots to discuss the company’s plans, they’ve certainly generated tremendous attention from the French media.

At the moment, RoboCARE uses two different robots. The first is called Milo, and is built by Texas-based RoboKind. Milo’s face becomes animated when he speaks, and he makes small gestures and motions as he communicates.

Milo is used to lead group games, including memory quizzes, and group exercises or singing activities to keep nursing home residents engaged.

Fred Margolin, chief executive of RoboKind, said his company has been working on Milo for several years now. In the process, they’ve taken a robot that originally cost $35,000 to build and shrunk the cost to under $6,000, making it more affordable for industries that need widespread deployment.

In the U.S., RoboKind has focused on developing the robots for use with autistic children through a program called Robots4Autism. He’s hoping RoboCARE will create a French version of that curriculum, which is massive in terms of the scope of its content and lessons.

RoboKind is also working on finding ways to get Milo into U.S. nursing homes, and Margolin said the company believes the robot can be effective in helping to delay the early effects of dementia. He’s optimistic RoboCARE in France will pave the way for a broader international market, and has been impressed with the company’s progress.

“I seems like RoboCARE has really taken the ball and run with it,” Margolin said.

Starting next year, Milo will also be used in a school in Picardy, France to assist with teaching English. It can be challenging to find teachers, particularly at the elementary school level, who are qualified and capable of effectively teaching English, Houhou said. He hopes educators will embrace Milo as a new teaching tool.

The other robot used by RoboCARE is a telepresence machine from Suitable Technologies. This is also being tested by two Toulouse-area nursing homes.

This robot is a computer monitor on a stand with wheels. Family members who can’t afford to make regular visits can book time online with the robot, and then control it from their own computer.

Houhou said the system provides big advantages over basic Skype video chats or phone calls. The fact that the robot can follow a resident around often leads to longer calls and interactions. And in many cases, residents may not be capable of using a computer or holding a phone for extended periods.

More importantly, whether its Milo or the telepresence robot, Houhou says the robots create a more enhanced feeling that the person is closer.

“The robot is a presence,” Houhou said. “You are not there, but it feels more like a real person.”

A drop in the number of computer science degrees followed by a rise in the number of coding bootcamp graduates appears to support this notion. Are coding bootcamps causing a reduction in computer science degrees? Or are they simply responding to a reduction from some unknown cause (for example, cost, increased difficulty perception, other more interesting degrees, etc.)?

The U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics, which collects, analyzes, and shares data on American education, has published extensive information about the history of bachelor’s degrees, which shows a drop in the percentage of bachelor’s degrees conferred in computer science over the last decade:

Keep your existing investors engaged and excited. The other piece of advice that I hear myself constantly reminding our companies of is to keep the existing investors engaged and excited. Too often, those monthly emails or short phone calls or coffee are taken for granted. Sure, entrepreneurs are busy. But investors start to wonder how the company is faring if they don’t hear anything. In the case of a seed extension, it’s imperative to keep the momentum, especially when the Series A marketplace may provide a negative signal. Little nuggets like customer anecdotes, compelling stats, etc. that the partner on the deal can share with her/his partners help keep up the momentum.

Gut check the insiders. When the company appears to be heading towards a seed extension, with a minimum six months before cash out, it’s wise to start taking a gut check of the current investors. Who plans to write the extension check and for how much? Some funds are automatic in the extension, some will do pro-rata of the total raised, some insiders will price/others will not.

I’ve even seen some investors say they will not do extensions under any circumstance, which frankly feels quite unsupportive. But it’s important for the entrepreneur to know early how much they have from the insiders. The insiders already know each other, so managing them carefully is critical, and the signal from these insiders will speak volumes to the broader funding community.

Those that manage their existing investors correctly will often find that virtually all of them provide a second check. Many funds have already earmarked the capital, and if not, they may take it from their Series A follow-on. Most investors want to support their companies. I’m also increasingly seeing insiders who may have seemed a bit more passive (often non-lead investors) step up and say they’ll lead the extension. This is huge and a reason to keep all your relationships warm — big and small investors alike.

Toyota launches $111m fund for startups working on AI, robotics, and hydrogen power

Toyota, the world’s largest automaker, announced overnight a JPY 13.5 billion (US$111 million) investment fund for startups developing advanced automotive technologies. The new fund is a collaboration between Toyota and two financial institutions: Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) and asset management company Sparx Group. The fund is named “Mirai Creation Investment Limited Partnership,” a hat tip to Toyota’s hydrogen-cell vehicle – which went on sale October 21 – and the Japanese word for “future.”

According to a report by We Are Social, the current market doesn’t not seem particularly promising for tech startups upon first glance — with only 2.2 million active smartphone users and 3.8 million active Internet users. Still, the growth numbers look promising — with a 414 per cent jump in Internet users since January of last year. The number of smartphone users has also leaped 100 per cent within that time frame.

The small Southeast Asian country of 6.6 million is still wetting its feet in the digital age. According to a We Are Social report, Laos has just 850,000 active Internet users with 680,000 social media users. However, since January 2014 there has been a 20 per cent jump in Internet users and social media users leaped 62 per cent.

While it’s still very early days, there has been some tech activity. Last-minute hotel booking app HotelQuickly expanded to Laos in Oct 2014 and the National University of Laos has launched the Lao IT Business Incubator Center to support tech startups.

I have some questions: you say "In the case of overseas orders, we charge a service fee equal to 8% of the order amount." You also say "The delivery cost has been determined by the weight of the ordered product and included in the total bill." So in that case where is the 8% handling fee? Is this the same as shipping cost or is this an additional amount? If it is additional, what additional service is it paying for?
