“It seems that stay-at-home father households are not common for several reasons,” they wrote. “First, perceptions toward stay-at-home fathers as well as career mothers are negative. Both males and females appear to perceive working fathers and stay-at-home mothers more favorably than they perceive stay-at-home fathers and career mothers. The app will take advantage of crowdsourcing data from other units, and share the reports on a global map. So if I live in an area with a ton of Atmotubes in use, I can gain air quality reports for a specific region before passing through it myself. This will also, hopefully, provide a more direct visual of just how polluted our local environment actually is.

Mikhnenko recalled a recent trip to China, “It was interesting, because we were touring factories in China three months ago, and we were running the demo for [the Atmotube] to this one group. And the air quality inside the room was pretty bad. So they were like, ‘Ok! Let me open the window.’ And the air quality immediately dropped! So it was like … ‘OK … Let me just close this back up.'”

Things aren’t necessarily that much better in the U.S. Especially inside cars. “In cars it is interesting,” said Kozyr: “We find that when we’re in traffic, and we have the windows open, the air quality goes down! When you close the windows and turn on the air conditioning, it slightly goes up.”

And access to this kind of real-time data has made a significant change in how Mikhnenko lives his life, “Now, with this thing, I’ve changed my behavior a lot. “And I got annoyed,” Mikhnenko explained, “because this [Atmotube] got me thinking about how, right now, these cars outside are slowly killing us. Because they emit carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. And these elements are deadly, and no one cares.”

Didi, Uber Competitor eDaijia Cuts 20% Of Staff As O2O War Takes Its Toll

Chinese designated driver app eDaijia is cutting one fifth of their staff in an attempt to stay competitive, as market giants Didi and Uber expand aggressively.

According to multiple Chinese media outlets who cite an internal letter from the company’s CEO, Yang Jiajun, the company will be laying off approximately 20% of their staff to curb spending in the face of rising competition.

中国の配車アプリのeDaijaは市場大手のDidiとUberの積極的な拡大に伴い、競争力維持の為に５分の１の社員を削減している。

CEOのYang Jiajun氏の内部文書を引用した複数の中国メディアによると、会社は競争激化に直面しコスト削減の為に約２０%の社員を解雇する予定だ。

The source claims that eDaijia’s personnel have quadrupled since the beginning of 2015 as part of an all-out attempt to compete with market leaders. However the CEO now feels that their numbers are “bloated”, and that the company will have to streamline personnel in order to stay competitive.

2015 has seen China’s ride-hailing market become increasingly focussed on core players Didid Kuaidi and Uber China. Both companies secured multi-billion USD funding rounds over the summer in an attempt to grab an early market share in China. eDaijia’s latest funding round totaled $100 million USD in May, with an estimated market cap of around $800 million USD.

When eDaijia launched in 2011 they differentiated from large competitors by marketing themselves as a chauffeur service. Didi has since encroached on the space, by launching their own designated driver service this July called ‘Didi Chauffer’. At the time of the launch Didi claimed they would have the service running in more than 100 cities by the end of 2015.

In October this year eDaijia joined forces with UCAR, also known as Shenzhen Zuche, in a strategic partnership that allows them to share resources including chauffeur teams, databases and marketing costs. The recent round of layoffs has sparked debate as to whether the two companies are planning a complete merger.

China’s O2O and on-demand services have seen increasing rounds of consolidation in 2015, beginning with the merger of ride-hailing giants Didi Dache and Kuaidi Dache. The country’s largest tech names Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent have expanded aggressively into the area, heavily subsidizing their services as each hopes to dominate capital-rich sectors. For companies like eDaijia, having minimal cash reserves could spell disaster in a market that favors early acquisition tactics.

Some drivers threatened to organize a strike, though it seems that strike never occurred on a large scale. When Nadiem Makarim, Go-Jek’s founder went on stage during the Tech in Asia Jakarta conference last week, he pointed out that only a few drivers were disgruntled by the changes and tried to instigate a boycott, but that most drivers accepted the decision and continued business as usual.

Such an extreme case is unlikely in the O2O sector, of course. But even a smaller-scale scandal could have serious repercussions for a food delivery business. After all, if you saw on the news that Food Delivery Company A had just delivered a bunch of E. Coli-infected food to a local office recently, would you still order your lunch from them, or would you be switching to Food Delivery Company B instead? O2O delivery firms don’t produce their food, but if customers have doubts about their sourcing, they may well be inspired to switch delivery companies anyway.

Given that, it would be advisable for China’s O2O food delivery firms to follow the authorities and play by the book on this one. Requiring proper licenses – and checking to be sure they’re legit – might make the high-speed expansion that’s been a big part of O2O’s growth in China more difficult, but if that helps ensure customers are getting food prepared in properly licensed kitchens and not off-the-books back-alley spots with no SFDA oversight, it’s worth it.

Keep your existing investors engaged and excited. The other piece of advice that I hear myself constantly reminding our companies of is to keep the existing investors engaged and excited. Too often, those monthly emails or short phone calls or coffee are taken for granted. Sure, entrepreneurs are busy. But investors start to wonder how the company is faring if they don’t hear anything. In the case of a seed extension, it’s imperative to keep the momentum, especially when the Series A marketplace may provide a negative signal. Little nuggets like customer anecdotes, compelling stats, etc. that the partner on the deal can share with her/his partners help keep up the momentum.

Gut check the insiders. When the company appears to be heading towards a seed extension, with a minimum six months before cash out, it’s wise to start taking a gut check of the current investors. Who plans to write the extension check and for how much? Some funds are automatic in the extension, some will do pro-rata of the total raised, some insiders will price/others will not.

I’ve even seen some investors say they will not do extensions under any circumstance, which frankly feels quite unsupportive. But it’s important for the entrepreneur to know early how much they have from the insiders. The insiders already know each other, so managing them carefully is critical, and the signal from these insiders will speak volumes to the broader funding community.

Those that manage their existing investors correctly will often find that virtually all of them provide a second check. Many funds have already earmarked the capital, and if not, they may take it from their Series A follow-on. Most investors want to support their companies. I’m also increasingly seeing insiders who may have seemed a bit more passive (often non-lead investors) step up and say they’ll lead the extension. This is huge and a reason to keep all your relationships warm — big and small investors alike.

Always be fundraising. Keep your eyes and ears open. One company I invested in was considering going out for a seed extension, and while they were discussing the terms of the note, an investor called asking about the A. The team ultimately decided to take a smaller amount of money from this investor, letting them get back to work more quickly.

Be realistic about the metrics required for a Series A. B2B companies need to show real revenue and multiple name brand partnerships that have progressed beyond pilots. Investors are going to peel the onion. Expect them to do real diligence with your customers. If you don’t have enthusiastic advocates using the product, be prepared for disappointment.

Consumer-focused companies need to be making serious progress. You need to be in the Zeitgeist at some level. You don’t have to be Instagram, but you have to have something. If a VC (or their spouses/kids/associates) hasn’t heard of your company, it’s going to be a tough process.

In both cases, Series A investors will want to see that you’ve hired a team. If you haven’t been able to pry one real superstar away from a lucrative gig at a big company, your chances will be diminished.
