Apple on Wednesday announced its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference,which is expected to play host to our first look at iOS7 and OS X 10.9.With the announcement came the unveiling of a brand new logo,and,in typical Apple fan fashion,we've taken a closer look at the logo and its design to speculate over possible clues hidden within it.

Apple is known for its cryptic event invitations,in which the company has previously hidden hints about what to expect during big keynotes.Last year,Apple launched its Retina MacBook Pro at its WWDC keynote,and also showed off iOS6 and OS X Mountain Lion previews,so Apple watchers are eagerly anticipating this year's event to find out what's in store next.

We won't find out for sure until the event kicks off on 10 June,although Apple has confirmed that we'll be treated to an "in-depth" look at the future of iOS and OS X,but for now,we can puzzle over the WWDC 2013 logo in an attempt to uncover some clues.

-The typeface

Apple's WWDC 2013 logo design differs quite dramatically from previous years.First up,Apple has ditched the Apple logo,which featured in the logos for its previous two WWDC events.Additionally,Apple has used a new typeface,which looks cleaner and more modern than the Myriad font used by the company in the past.

6月10日に実際にイベントが始まってからでなければ、確実なことは誰にも分からないでしょう。Appleによると、次世代のiOSとOS Xを「詳しく」知ることができると約束しました。でも、今のうちはWWDC 2013のロゴマークに隠されたヒントを探しながら暗号を解けないかやってみたいと思います。

-Roman numerals

This year,Apple has gone for Roman numerals to detail the date (MMXIII is the roman numeral for 2013).It's an unusual move for the company,and does remind us of Samsung's use of roman numerals for its Samsung Galaxy S smartphones.

The Roman numerals are depicted as a sort of reflection of WWDC,which some here in the Macworld UK office have suggested could relate to similarities between iOS and OS X,or perhaps improved AirPlay mirroring functionality.

Several of our Twitter followers think that the Roman numerals could hint at an iWatch,which has been circling the rumour mills for a while now,following reports that Apple has a team of 100 designers working on such device.

While we'd love to see Apple launch an iWatch in June,Apple CEO Tim Cook's comments that the company is working on "amazing" new products in "exciting" new categories ready for release in Autumn and throughout 2014 suggest that we won't be seeing a venture into a new market from Apple until later this year,at the earliest.

-The shape

Aside from the typography,the shape of Apple's WWDC 2013 logo is also interesting.

The shape of the logo is familiar,with the rounded square resembling iOS icons.We already know that iOS7 is likely to make an appearance at WWDC this year,so this could be an indication that we'll be seeing some new iOS functionality.

-外形

書体だけでなく、AppleのWWDC 2013のロゴマークは、その形もユニークです。

このロゴマークの外形は、iOSのアイコンでおなじみの、角を丸くした正方形です。iOS7が今年のWWDCでおそらく登場するだろうと思われますので、この外形は、iOSのいくつかの新機能を暗示しているということもあり得ます。

It's expected that iOS7 could see a complete user interface redesign,and reports have suggested that Apple may also launch a 'killer app' in the form of an 'iRadio' music streaming service,or perhaps a mobile payment system with the iOS update.

The shape is also shared by the Mac mini and Apple TV,so we could be in for an update of one or both of those Apple products.

-The colours

When it comes to the variety of colours shown in the logo,it's been suggested that this could be a hint at the introduction of new colour options for the next-generation iPhone,dubbed iPhone 5S or iPhone 6.The colours shown in the logo are various shades of green,orange,blue,yellow,purple and red.

iPhone 5S Will Have Larger Camera, New Fingerprint Technology, Same Screen Size

Topeka analyst Brian White today issued a new research note summarizing his thoughts on the phone he calls the iPhone5S,expected to be released this summer.Most notably,he seems to have reversed his prior assertion that the next iPhone will have multiple screen sizes,noting that at a trade show in China there was a consensus amongst his sources that the screen size will be unchanged from the iPhone5.

He claims the left side volume and mute buttons will be arranged differently,in line with a parts leak from yesterday,and says the rumored fingerprint technology will be the differentiating feature for the 5S,like what Siri was to the 4S.

Strangely enough,the lower-priced iPhone is still being called the "iPhone mini"; however,the general consensus was that this new device would actually have the same screen size as the iPhone 5.However,the "iPhone mini" will have a curved back casing made of colored plastic and will be thicker than the iPhone 5.We also learned the pricing could be a bit higher than our recently raised expectation,reaching as high as $400.

The picture around this summer's iPhone releases should continue to come into focus as we see more hardware leaks and get closer to the expected launch.

American Copycat: MessageMe is Just a Clone of Popular Asian Chat Apps

American mobile chat app MessageMe has been generating a lot of buzz since its launch just a couple of weeks ago, and with good reason. TechCrunch reports the app has already garnered more than a million users and sent more than ten million doodles. Why? TechCrunch writes the app is setting itself apart in the crowded mobile chat market with its features:

But it really isn’t innovative at all; nearly every feature MessageMe offers was already available in Asian mobile chat apps that have been around much longer than the American app. Here’s a quick breakdown of the feature list for MessageMe and four popular Asian chat apps; pay special attention to the launch dates:

As you can see from the chart above, music integration is the only area where MessageMe really really sets itself apart, and even that has been available in Weixin (the Chinese version of WeChat) since last fall, albeit via a third-party plugin. Most of the other features TechCrunch says MessageMe is hoping to set itself apart with have been available for years on other apps; I was sending doodles to my wife using Xiaomi’s Miliao mobile chat app all the way back in 2010.
