Cooliris has long been known for dazzling 3D photo gallery displays. And its Adjitsu 3D advertising graphics look just as slick. Products displayed in 3D can attract far more user interaction, as you can see in the demo video below. Here we see a Nokia Lumia 800 phone being turned and then viewed from multiple angles, and color changes are toggled with controls on the side.

Personally speaking, I wasn’t even aware of the fact that Cooliris had branched into this kind of business. Indeed this small, standalone business unit was only just spun-off by Cooliris in 2011. It’s certainly a practical use of 3D technology, in contrast with other 3D experiments which may have gone bust.

Camera360 Startup Clicks With Investors, Gets Nearly $10 Million in Funding

The Chinese startup behind the popular photographic app Camera360 has secured nearly US$10 million in series A funding, led by Singapore-based Gobi Partners and US-based Matrix Partners. The team behind it is Pinguo, which also makes the Viddy-esque app Movie360.

The funding was revealed by Gobi’s MD, Tong Weiliang, who also confirmed the financing figure.

Pinguo says it has over 30 million users across its three image-filtering apps for Android and iPhone (there’s also the PhotoShop-esque Photo360). The app makers are located in southwestern China’s Sichuan province, far from the usual startup hubs around Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangdong. CEO Xu Hao has told Chinese media that he’s already working on some series B funding that could be wrapped up in the second half of the year.

Camera360 was one of the first Chinese-made apps to go global, so far racking up over five million downloads on the Google Play Store (for Android) alone, where it has an exemplary four-and-a-half star rating.

In the short span of only two days, two industry moguls either updated its existing offering or eventually delivered its long-awaited service to make storage accessible to smartphone holders from anywhere at anytime, doesn’t that add up to something?

These big guys’ advancing in cloud storage forefront may well speak to the fact that the demand for ubiquitous storage is on the rise, echoed by Kanbox chairman Huang Mingming’s claim that cloud storage is standing a good chance to pull off blockbuster growth in this year. Kanbox is a China-based online storage service backed by DCM and SIG China.

Huang told me in an interview in the company’s Beijing Sanlitun-located office that the proliferation of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets coupled with growing improvement of wireless Internet connection in China is creating an exploding huge demand for gadget holders to store their files to “cloud”. He saw cloud storage as the next big thing in the Internet development, be it in China or globally.

Huang categorizes China’s online storage services into two groups; group No. 1 is characterized by its public file-sharing inherence, through which you can download hot music and movies, bestsellers and so forth. Group No.2, according to him, zero in on help users hoard personal files that of value to them in digitized form to cloud for easy access afterwards. Kanbox is the one of the post children of this group.

Founded in 2010 staffed by Internet veterans from Chinese Internet big-names like Tencent, Huawei, Kingsoft and so on, kanbox now boasts a team of north of 80 while half of them are on the R&D payroll. The Beijing-based company last year raised US$ 20 million in second round of financing led by DCM with participation of SIG China.

Kanbox attaches much value to its users’ individual data storage. To quote him directly, “Public files just aren’t of very high value to you, say, you download a breakout movie today and then even if you delete it by mistake it’s no big deal cause you can get it again anyway. But, what if you lose all your personal pictures and videos took over the past two years, your contacts book and working documents?” That’s an irretrievable and immeasurable injury.

Images on the web service can now be embedded on external websites, much as you could with a Flickr image or a YouTube video. The interesting part here is that once embedded, the image links back to the creators profile and features a credit on the bottom that attributes the image to them. Content creators can enable or disable embedding permissions according to their preference.

There’s also a fairly intrusive “The Creative Finder” logo, and that may or may not bother publishers who wish to embed the image. I’d be ok with it, but I’m not sure if everyone else would be.

The selection is somewhat limited so far (a search for ‘dog’ only gives 10 results) but this should improve as more people put their images on the site. For creatives who want to show off their work, the site has a freemium model with paid plans of $9.99 per month and $14.99 per month bringing a range of added features over the base plan. And the free plan is indeed pretty limited, as you can only publish up to 10 photos. But with the new embedded feature, it does mean that more people could potentially see your work. Personally, I still prefer to rock my own photo gallery.

In any case The Creative Finder does look like a very promising service. And this new embed feature is a solid step towards making it a little bit better, not just for creatives, but also for those who want to use their work with proper attribution.

The Best and the Brightest

In The Best and the Brightest, David Halberstam’s classic book on how the United States got itself into the quagmire in Vietnam, he identified several reasons for why a superpower would fall to what President Lyndon Johnson called a “raggedy-ass little fourth-rate country”, and why brilliant men like Johnson himself as well as his subordinates such as Robert McNamara and McGeorge Bundy were unable to foresee and forestall a tragedy of Greek proportion.

Though written forty years ago, the lessons drawn by Halberstam from the debacle still ring true today. The best and the brightest still fails, and such is the case with Gaopeng.com.
