豚革とは豚の原皮を鞣したもので、主にファッション素材として使われる革です
日本では、東京の墨田区で19世紀後半から豚革の製造が始まったとされています。

昔は価値の低かった豚革ですが、牛革よりも加工が容易なので、牛革にはできない用途でも活用されたり、タンナーの減少に伴い少しずつ価値が見直されています。

また日本の豚革は、三元豚という品種のもので肌が綺麗で革が大きいのが特徴で、世界から見ても質が良く優秀なため、エルメスやヴィトンなどの有名ブランドも日本から仕入れているそうです。

Translation

Pigskin leather is a leather where leather of pig is tanned, and is mainly used as a material of fashion.
In Japan, it is said that manufacturing of the pigskin leather had started in the latter half of 19th century in Sumida-ku, Tokyo.

The pigskin was inexpensive long time ago. But as it is easier to be processed in comparison with calf leather, it has been used for the purpose where the calf leather is impossible. In addition, as number of tanner is decreasing, its value has been reviewed gradually.

As for pigskin leather in Japan, its characteristics is that the type called sangen pigs has a beautiful skin and leather is large as well as is rated high quality and superior in the world. For this reason, famous brand including Hermes and Viton are also purchasing from Japan.
