The Bloomberg Center

The Bloomberg Center is Cornell’s main academic hub. The building will be outfitted with an auditorium, classrooms, studios, and office space. Though most of the Bloomberg Center will be closed off to pedestrians, the building will have a public cafe and art space where the community will be invited to congregate.

Last year, for the first time, Facebook surpassed YouTube in overall video views. Now, says Mixpo, marketers will join everyday users — whose video posts on Facebook grew 94 percent in the U.S. year over year — in their preference for Facebook video.

Yet even as advertisers will be turning more to Facebook than YouTube this year, Mixpo argued, their use of social as a marketing platform doesn’t match the way everyday people use social.

How music labels are trying to kill off Spotify’s unlimited free streaming

As Taylor Swift goes, so goes just about everybody else.

Last fall, Taylor Swift shut out music-streaming services like Spotify from the release of her latest album. This week, it seems like the big labels are finally, if a little slowly, paying attention.

On Friday, Universal Music told the Financial Times they’re pressuring Spotify to curtail the features offered in its free version. Universal is hoping stricter limits will convert more listeners to paying subscribers.

Rather unsurprisingly, this move comes after last month’s Billboard report that Spotify was the driving force behind Universal’s 75% bump in streaming revenue for 2014.

Currently, Spotify offers unlimited on-demand streaming on computers, but limits mobile devices to a randomized, more Pandora-like service. Paid subscribers (full disclosure: that includes me) hear no ads and get access to things like higher-quality streams and offline access.

But with Universal’s latest comments, the heads of all three (yes, there are now only three) major music labels have said there isn’t enough difference between paid and “freemium” services.

Spotify has long said that a robust free service is the only proven way to convert users to paid subscribers. At a 2013 conference unveiling Spotify’s newly unlimited mobile services, CEO Daniel Ek said “We’re giving people the best free music experience in the history of the smartphone. And the more you play, the more likely you are to pay.”

In the world of tech there have been only three IPOs so far this year, which have raised $800 million, according to Renaissance. The most notable has probably been the Box IPO in January, which raised $175 million.

Even worse, proceeds raised so far are only $4 billion, down 44.4 percent from last year. And the forecast for IPOs remains chilly. The 32 IPOs filed so far this are down 50 percent from a year ago.

Granted, stocks haven’t been on fire this year. But they haven’t tanked either, which makes the cold shoulder from Wall Street a bit harder to explain. The Dow Jones is up .13 percent on the year; the NASDAQ is up 4.24 percent; and the S&P 500 is up .63 percent.

Intel aims to double the number of women in gaming

Building on Intel’s diversity announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, the world’s biggest chip maker announced that it will work with the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) to double the number of women working in gaming.

As part of this expansion of IGDA’s programs, Intel has already sponsored 40 game development students to attend Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, where the company announced the news.

Intel also said that it will hold the Intel Challenge Katowice, a women’s e-sports tournament, under the same roof as the finals of Intel Extreme Masters beginning March 12.

Intel announced at CES it would invest $300 million in programs that will bring more women and other diverse talent to the tech and game industries. It was a response to a mistake where Intel pulled ads from a game publication after a group of gamers complained about a pro-feminist column. The problem was that Intel then realized it looked bad, because it seemed like it was supporting those with an anti-women point of view. Intel chief executive Brian Krzanich stepped up to announced the diversity program in response.

“We need not only diverse games, but diversity in the industry,” said Pete Baker, a vice president of software and services at Intel.

About 48 percent of game players are women, according to the Entertainment Software Association. But only 22 percent of those creating games are female.

‘We see this disparity even though we are in the 21st century,” said Kate Edwards, executive director of the IGDA, at Intel’s press event. “Intel has been a fantastic partner for the IGDA. We will see great changes in game content.”

She said she hopes more companies in the industry will step forward on issues of diversity. The programs focus on acquisition of talent and retention of talent. The IGDA hopes to double the number of women in games in the next decade.

“We realize that’s something like a space program goal, but that’s why you do it,” Edwards said.

Alibaba’s direct influence in Taiwan as an internet company is less than that in the mainland. The company has been aggressively recruiting Taiwanese vendors to join Taobao, and even holds regular classes that teach potential merchants how to navigate the crowded marketplace. While Taiwanese consumers will regularly purchase items from Taobao or Tmall, which support local payment and delivery customs, the island’s ecommerce industry has matured independently of Alibaba. PCHome and Yahoo! Taiwan are generally cited as the island’s top two ecommerce providers.
