The 4 things Google believes are key to the future of search

TOULOUSE, France — Before talking about the future of search, one of Google’s top researchers wants you to understand just how dramatically search has changed in the past two years.

Speaking at the Futurapolis conference in Toulouse, Behshad Behzadi, director of search innovation at Google’s Zurich lab, pointed out that the majority of searches now happen on mobile devices.

And with Google’s cloud auto-tagging photos, searching images has become more effective. In addition, Google’s search will now even look into other apps on your smartphone for answers, he said, and open those apps that have the best info.

Context: Increasingly, Google’s search engine is linking your searches to understand what you’re trying to find or figure out. So, if you search using the word “castle,” for instance, you could get an infinite number of hits from around the world. But if you search first for “London,” and then for “castle,” the search engine remembers that you’re looking at London and automatically narrows the search field for you.

Also, on Android phones, if you’re looking at a Facebook post, for instance, and hold down the home button while making a voice query, Google will scan the contents of that app (or other apps) and find relevant information without your having to copy and paste things between apps to do a search.

Pilih Dokter wants to solve two medical problems in Indonesia

The internet can help change the way industries do business, including the health industry—at least that’s what Pilih Dokter (which means “choose doctor”) wants to prove. The company is backed by experienced co-founders: Irwan Hartanto, who worked as an engineer at Silicon Valley as well as being an assistant vice president at Bank of America, Mayapada Hospital director Grace Tahir, and Ronald Kumalaputra, who runs the express convenience store Bao Bao Express.

How does Pilih Dokter plan to change the industry? Hartanto explains that it wants to offer solutions to mainly two problems in the medical world: lack of local doctor exposure and lack of medical information in Indonesia. Regarding the first problem, he explains that there are about 150,000 doctors in Indonesia, but only a few hundred get really famous and have available references from patients. What about the other 149,000 doctors?

To solve that problem, Pilih Dokter wants to provide a doctor database. It is user-generated, so the team asks the doctors one by one to sign up to the service. On it, doctors can write medical blogs as well as receive recommendations from users, which could help strengthen their exposure. Currently there are still less than 1,000 doctors signed up.

Crowdfunding sites makes copied-in-China even easier: All is needed is a Photoshopped image

Pressy Button, a small gadget for Android devices, landed on Kickstarter in August 2013. It drew much media attention as it met its fundraising goal in a single day. Two months later the project ended up with more than 7 times of its goal in funding from more than 28 thousand contributors.

Before long Pressy would come across many Pressy Buttons on Alibaba.com, the marketplace ran by Alibaba Group for Chinese to sell goods overseas. The search query “Pressy” returns a lot of results featuring Pressy Button. None of them, of course, is by Pressy team.

Quick Button claims its team began with demand analysis and feasibility study in March 2013 and it’s the world’s first of this kind. But there isn’t a real thing in any images (as you can see below) or the intro video on Quick Button’s Demohour page.

Quick Button got onto Demohour in mid-December 2013 and got successfully funded one month later with 20 times of its target amount of funding from 2432 backers. Most of the 9 team members, according its Demohour page, are from Shanghai Jiaotong University and Harbin Institute of Technology, two of the top colleges in China.

Even if Quick Button didn’t lie about the time when the idea popped into its parent developers’ mind, having some pictures or a fancy video on a crowdfunding site really doesn’t mean anything. The interesting fact is Quick Button posted an apology note on Demohour on Jan. 19th, for they couldn’t deliver the promise that the gadget would be shipped one month after the funding was finished. Their reason is all the 10,000 something buttons produced are defective, for employees at their partner manufacturer, so eager to travel home for Chinese New Year, ‘did shoddy work and used inferior materials’ .

Combining an app with some peripherals that attach to the frame of a bicycle, cyclists can now monitor their rides more accurately via smartphone. Gudong’s smart stopwatch distance, speed, altitude, and cadence calorie consumption. Mount the phone on a set of handlebars, and you’ve got a heads-up display that can vocalize turn-by-turn directions. All your stats are stored and shared on the cloud. The project raised RMB 15,435 ($2,550) so far on Demohour, and fundraising ends on March 17.
