Online Tea Retailer Maimaicha.com Raising US$ 15M from Domestic Investors

Maimaicha.com, a Chinese B2C vertical provides online retail of tea today announced raising RMB hundreds of millions (US$ 15 million) in Series A round of funding from four domestic venture capitals.

The funding will go towards website upgrading, warehousing expansion as well as diving deeper into upstream industry chains, according to the Shandong (eastern China) province-based company.

Ma Yufeng, its CEO said the company has set up one warehouse in Ji’nan city of Shandong province at which it headquartered while a Beijing warehouse is currently under construction.

Chinese online marketplace is seeing amounting competition as Tencent, Shanda among other internet giants are in scramble for the fruitful waterfront with their latest initiatives, like B2C new comer Pinju.com by shanda and QQ Wanggou by Tencent. However, verticals focusing on a niche market still have their own edges as compared to general B2C sites.

Gartner: Lenovo is Now Number 2 PC Maker

Last month we looked at second quarter figures from iSuppli that indicated Lenovo (HKG:0992) had jumped to third spot in the personal computer market. And now today, research firm Gartner estimates that the company’s third quarter shipments are enough to vault it past Dell into the number two spot.

According to Gartner’s preliminary worldwide shipment estimates (which do not include tablets), Hewlett Packard remains the top PC vendor with 17.7 percent market share (up from 17.3 last year). This despite recent news that it might be looking to spin off its PC business, although today The Wall Street Journal says HP is rethinking that plan.

Lenovo’s strong showing was helped by its tie-up with Japan’s NEC. The Chinese PC maker took 13.5 percent of the market, up from 11.1 percent last year. This was enough to overtake Dell, which sits in third spot with 11.6 percent. Taiwanese vendors Acer and Asus round out the global top five at 10.6 percent and 6.2 percent respectively.

Looking at the big picture in Asia, Gartner says that PC shipments grew six percent over last year, reaching 31.8 million units shipped in the third quarter of 2011. In Japan, shipments were up three percent, with 3.9 million units moved.

Kyocera’s Demos Tactile Feedback Touchscreen Buttons at CEATEC [VIDEO]

When we visited Kyocera at CEATEC Japan last week, we had a chance to try out the company’s ‘New Feeling Touch Panel.’ It’s a haptic feedback touchscreen that makes pressing a flat surface feel like pushing a regular button.

The demonstration included a variety of buttons, such as a jelly type, clickable, or buzzer style buttons. The buttons can also be assigned levels of depths, meaning that you could do a half push or a full push with two assigned levels. In the demo we saw (see video below) we got to try seven levels of depth, which was amazingly cool.

先週、我々がCEATEC Japanで京セラブースを訪れた際、同社の「新感覚タッチスクリーン」を試すことができた。それは触感フィードバックタッチスクリーンで平面を押しているのに、ふつうのボタンを押しているような感覚を得られるスクリーンだ。

展示ではゼリー型、クリック型、ブザー型などの多様なボタンがあった。ボタンには深さレベルを設定でき、半押し、全押しの二つの設定レベルを選ぶことができる。下のデモ(下記動画参照)では7レベルの深さを試すことができ、その触感はすごかった。

According to Kyocera, this new touch panel “uses vibration to excite the nerves in the finger to illicit a quasi tactile feeling.” The screen uses a piezoelectric element to create this tactile feeling.

Of course, one of the current knocks against many of today’s touchscreen devices is that they lack a tactile feeling. My personal pet peeve is the virtual keyboard on an iPad, which I find tricky to use. Whether or not a technology like this could actually improve that experience is not clear to me, but I have my fingers crossed that someday it might

現在のタッチスクリーン機器に対する不満のひとつは触感がないことだ。個人的には例えばiPadのヴァーチャルキーボードは使いづらく、不満を持っている。こうした技術によって使い勝手を改善できるかどうかはわからないが、そうなることを期待したいと思う。

Indeed, as a new infographic from IPO Dashboards reveals, this year’s hardest-hit industry is the tech sector, whose global IPOs fell an average of nearly 20 percent as some observers squabbled over whether a new tech bubble was about to pop.

Looking at the infographic, the only real tech IPO winner from China is Qihoo (NYSE:QIHU), the anti-virus vendor, with 15.31 percent growth this year from its debut on the tickers. It’s fully interactive, so click on any bar to see further stats and percentages:

Which means there are a lot of IPO losers who have gotten a bit nauseous on their roller-coaster ride. The Chinese ones are: the dating site, Jiayuan (NASDAQ:DATE); data centre operator 21Vianet (NASDAQ:VNET); the children’s digital entertainment network, Taomee (NYSE:TAOM); chip maker BCD (NASDAQ:BCDS), video-sharing site Tudou (NASDAQ:TUDO), social network, Renren (NYSE:RENN), and anti-virus provider Netqin (NYSE:NQ), whose value plummetted 62 percent.

As for American social media, we’re getting very mixed messages, with SNS IPOs both gaining the most (LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD)) and failing the hardest (that’s you, FriendFinder (NYSE:FFN)). Clearly that’s due to judgements on their ability to monetize, or the value to advertisers of their users.

It’s such a poor economic climate right now, it’s possible that only one further Chinese company will float in New York this year – the e-commerce platform Vancl, which aims to raise as much as US$1 billion.

But with some fearing that “a winter is coming” for tech companies in China, it might be too early to gauge who truly won or lost in 2011.

It’s a rough year. An awful economic situation across much of the western world has restricted sources of investment; in China, tech companies and start-ups have come to be viewed with some suspicion after the post-IPO scandals at Longtop and Sino-Forest; plus, tightening regulations in the Chinese tech and media industry will make it much harder to access foreign investment going forward. All mashed together, it has made for a year of extreme winners and losers amongst this year’s Chinese tech IPOs.

Even if Project Z launched tomorrow and Zynga’s IPO were delayed into Q2 2012, the idea that Zynga could somehow be completely independent of Facebook by that time is ridiculous. Facebook is Zynga’s primary source of traffic and no other social network or games portal in the United States is in a position to cut Zynga any kind of deals that would yield comparable numbers. There is the idea that Facebook could abruptly change its terms of service with social game developers in a way that would hurt Zynga’s revenues — but why would Facebook do that when it has spent the last year trying to rebuild and nurture its social games ecosystem?

It seems as though, at this time, Project Z is only a supplement to the Zynga experience on Facebook. Yes, the service asks players to create a new virtual identity using Ztags, but it’s affiliating that with a player’s Facebook identity via Connect. This creates a divergent experience where, on Zynga’s network, you’d have your game-life with your game-friends and publicly displayed in-game achievements. Meanwhile, on Facebook, you’d have your actual social graph — which might include Zynga game activity.

The only factor that could count as a tie cut with Facebook is whether or not Project Z would introduce a platform currency that could compete with Facebook Credits. Right now, Zynga Facebook games accept only Facebook Credits as a means to purchase in-game currency in keeping with Facebook’s July 1 policy change. Currently, Facebook does not require Facebook Connect-enabled games to make Credits a payment option; but it does require games that run both on Facebook and other networks to enforce price parity between games. If Zynga offered a paid currency only for use in Project Z games, it would be a step away from the social network and toward actual financial independence.

Facebookとの連携解消と見なされる唯一の要素は「Project Z」がFacebook Creditsと競合するプラットホーム通貨を導入することだ。ZyngaのFacebookのゲームではFacebookの7月1日のポリシー変更にあわせて現在Facebook Creditsのみをゲーム内通貨購入手段として認めている。FacebookはFacebook Connect可能なゲームにCreditsを支払い手段にするよう求めていない。しかしFacebook上と他ネットワーク上で動作するゲームに対して価格パリティを強いている。Zyngaが「Project Z」専用の支払い通貨を提供するならソーシャルネットワークから離れて、経済的独立への一歩となるだろう。
