Snapchat now has a friend in Asia with Tencent investment

Snapchat, the now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t messaging app now has a new buddy in Asia. This is because Tencent’s long-rumored investment in Snapchat has already happened, according to TechCrunch citing sources in China and the US.

It was thought that Tencent (HKG:0700), makers of WeChat, would invest in Snapchat in a future funding round, but it turns out that Tencent ploughed some money into Snapchat covertly during the US startup’s recent $60 million round. The larger investors in that round were IVP, General Catalyst, and Benchmark Capital. It’s not clear how much Tencent contributed.

Tencent could help Snapchat – which is often dubbed a sexting app due to its focus on sending photos – expand to Asia. While I’d rate Snapchat’s chances in China as slim to nothing, Tencent has other channels in India and Indonesia that could help Snapchat expand in south and southeast Asia. Tencent is pushing WeChat and its smartphone browser in India, Indonesia, and across Southeast Asia.

Tencent’s own WeChat messaging app now has 272 million active monthly users. Most of those are in China, but the app is slowly expanding overseas as well.

Tokopedia, Indonesia’s leading C2C marketplace, is valued at $20 million

Tokopedia, the popular C2C marketplace in Indonesia founded in 2009, is valued at $20 million, CEO William Tanuwijaya revealed this morning at Startup Asia Jakarta 2013.

In his discussion with Tech and Asia founder Willis Wee, Tanuwijaya explained that the company is not yet profitable, and doesn’t take commissions from merchants.

But trends show that e-money will grow much faster in the coming years. All of Indonesia’s e-money transactions in 2009 totaled IDR 1.4 billion ($122,000) per day. The following year it increased to IDR 1.9 billion ($165,000) per day. In 2011 the value rose to IDR 2.7 billion ($235,000) and last year it reached IDR 3.9 billion ($340,000) as seen in the graph above.

Up until May this year, 25.3 million e-money instruments (like BCA bank’s Flazz cards and Indomaret’s e-Toll cards) have been issued so far, surpassing last year’s tally of 21.9 million.

Regarding Indonesia’s payment adoption habits, the report says that out of Indonesia’s 60 million bank account holders, only 15 million of them use cashless payment methods like credit and debit cards. That leaves a lot of room for e-money to grow in Indonesia.

Kluje promises to renovate home improvement industry in Singapore

There are stories abound of unprofessional and shady contractors. Newly launched Kluje, hopes to solve the problem by letting you find verified contractors

Remember the wacky Singaporean contractor Phua Chu Kang from the eponymous sitcom, as he boasts being the “Best in Singapore, JB, and some say even Batam“? You may find him now on Kluje.com, an online platform to match home improvement projects with the right contractor.

Kluje has a simple 3-step process to realizing one’s dream home:

1. Homeowners post their home improvement jobs on the website for free.

2. Quality contractors, that have been vetted by Kluje with the relevant authorities (ACRA, BCA, Case Trust etc.), will then get to view these jobs – where up to three of them can bid on any one project. Contractors need to pay a basic monthly membership fee of $19.99, together with a lead cost (starting from $1), which is determined by the size of the home-owner’s budget, when they bid for projects.

By rating contractors, Kluje aims to create an industry standard where the larger community of home-owners can rely on. With over 9,000 registered and an estimated 4,000 unregistered contractors, Kluje will filter out the quality contractors, allowing them to build their online reputation and win even more work.
