Essentially, Silverline is a suite of healthcare and personal safety apps (pictured below) that are made with seniors in mind, with large icons and clear, simple text. Among the five current apps are ‘Connect’, which is a replacement for the phone’s contacts app; ‘Well Being’ provides alarms for things like taking medicine; and the ‘Emergency’ app gives one-tap access to Singapore‘s police or ambulance hotlines. The apps are initially available for iOS and can run on older handsets, such as an iPhone 3GS, so that they work fine on the kind of repurposed devices they hope youngsters will donate in a charitable fashion.

Silverlineは本質的には、お年寄りをターゲットとして大きなアイコンと明確で簡潔なテキストをベースとした、ヘルスケアと個人の安全のためのアプリだ。直近の5つのアプリは、電話帳のアプリを置き換える「Connect」、薬を飲む時などのリマインダーとして機能する「Well Being」、シンガポールの警察や救急ホットラインに1タップでアクセスできる「Emergency」などだ。iOS用で、iPhone 3GSなどの古い端末でも動作するため、若年層がリサイクル端末として寄付してくれることに期待している。

Silverline is being backed by local telco SingTel, which has been accepting old handset donations at stores for several months already, collecting any iPhone 3GS, 4, or 4S that can be given a new lease of life as a communication lifeline for a senior citizen in Singapore with these apps.

Silverlineはローカルの通信会社SingTelによって支援されている。既に数ヶ月間にわたって、シンガポールに住むお年寄りのライフラインとしてiPhone 3GS、4、4Sを復活させるべく、SingTelは店頭で古い端末の寄付をおこなっている。

Senior safety

With SingTel already on board, and the apps already developed for iOS, I asked Ciaran Lyons from NewtonCircus, the startup running this project, why it’s now taking the crowdfunding route:

Part of the crowdfunding budget will be used to work with some neat external devices – such as battery-powered accelerometers – which provide additional functionality. But so far everything can be installed on your factory-fresh smartphone – though we’d prefer it were second-hand.

お年寄りの安全

SingTelを味方につけ、iOS向けにアプリが開発済みななか、本プロジェクトを推進するNewtonCircusのCiaran Lyons氏に、クラウドファンディングの道を選んだ理由を訊いてみた。

「クラウドファンディング予算の一部は、電池で動く加速度計など、追加の機能を提供するすてきな外部デバイスとの連携に使われます。ただ現時点では、全ては新品のスマートフォンにインストール可能ではあります。リサイクル品の方が望ましいと考えていますが」

Ciaran adds that Silverline has so far clocked up “18 months of research, prototyping and user feedback to make sure that seniors love and benefit from our apps.” In addition to what the suite of apps do already, they’re working on bringing them to Android in future and getting the Silverline apps into the iTunes App Store so that anyone can make use of them. Plus, the startup is testing a personal security app that can detect falls, and has started building games that can detect cognitive decline.

Ciaran氏は、Silverlineが「お年寄りたちが確かに我々の製品を愛し、ベネフィットを享受できるよう、18ヶ月ものあいだ、研究とプロトタイピング、ユーザーフィードバック」を蓄積してきたとも付け加える。現時点でできることに加え、将来的にはAndroidに移植するとともに、Silverlineアプリ群をiTunes App Storeに加えて、みなが使える状態にしようと活動している。さらにこのスタートアップは、転倒を検知できる個人の安全用アプリをテスト中であり、また認知能力の低下を検知できるゲームも構築中という。

To keep the elderly connected once they’ve received the donated handsets, SingTel is giving 1,000 voice and data plans, good for a whole year, to the phone beneficiaries free of charge. Ciaran says that “the need, even just in Singapore, is far greater than that and it’s growing every year. So we have a lot to do.” But the SingTel site suggests that only 27 old iPhones have been donated so far, so the project is in need of a hardware boost so that some of Singapore’s neediest citizens can have these apps at their disposal.

お年寄りたちに、寄付された端末を使い続けてもらうために、SingTelは1000人に対して、音声・データプランを1年間無償で提供しようとしている。Ciaran氏は言う。「シンガポールだけでも、ニーズはこれよりも遙かに大きく、しかも毎年成長しています。まだまだやるべきことはあるのです」ただ、SingTelのサイトでは、まだ旧型のiPhoneが27台寄付されたにとどまっているという。よってこのプロジェクトは、シンガポールの最もニーズを抱えた市民たちにこのアプリを提供できるよう、端末を大幅に増やす必要があるのだ。

We’re told that Newton Circus is a startup of 11 people. Though they have received funding from different sources for various initiatives, there’s been no venture capital input as of yet. The team is working with registered charities in the US, UK, Hong Kong, and Australia to create similar phone donation programs there.

Why the WeChat vs. Weibo War Will Be the Year’s Biggest Story, and Why Weibo Needs to Win

When it comes to Chinese social media, it’s increasingly clear that there are two real players: Sina Weibo and Tencent’s WeChat. Oh, sure, there are others, but they’re all a bit passé these days. Renren and the other traditional social media networks are starting to look very outdated. Tencent Weibo and other microblogging competitors may have big user numbers, but there’s a reason that the big stories always break on Sina Weibo. And while some Chinese BBS forums still boast massive user numbers, they appeal to a limited demographic — chances are your grandmother is never going on Tianya.

なぜWeChatとWeiboの闘いが今年一番の話題なのか、そしてWeiboが勝たなくてはならないその理由

中国のソーシャルメディアに関しては、メジャープレイヤーは2つしかないことは明らかだ。Sina WeiboとTencentのWeChatである。勿論他にもプレイヤーはいるものの、やや時代遅れという感は否めない。Renrenなど他の伝統的なSNSは、時代遅れ感満載だ。Tencent Weiboや他のマイクロブログは大量のユーザー数を誇るかもしれないが、常に大きな話題はSina Weiboからしか生まれない。いくつかの掲示板サイトはいまだに大量のユーザー数を誇ってはいるが、人口全体でみればわずかに対してリーチできているに過ぎない。あなたの祖母がTianyaに辿り着くことはあり得ないだろう。

So it’s down to WeChat and Sina Weibo for the crown of who’s the coolest and who can grow the fastest. Outside China, WeChat has already won that race, and Sina isn’t even attempting to attract non-Chinese users to its weibo service. But inside China, Weibo boasts an intimidating 500 million users (although most of them aren’t active). WeChat broke 300 million users last month, and although not all of those users are in China, the service is growing fast and poised to overtake Weibo within the next few years.

一番クールで、一番速く成長できるサービスがどこなのかを巡る闘いは、WeChatとSina Weiboの直接対決となった。中国以外ではWeChatが既に勝利を得ている。Sinaは中国人ユーザー以外を取り込もうとすらしていない。だが中国の中では、Weiboはなんと5億人ものユーザーを誇る（とはいえ、大半がアクティブではない）。WeChatは3億ユーザーを先月突破した。ユーザーの全てが中国に住んでいるわけではないとはいえ、めざましい速度で成長しており、これからの数年でWeiboを追い落とす準備は整っている。

If you’re not a shareholder in Tencent or Sina or a Chinese social media user, it might seem like this doesn’t really matter. But because the services themselves are so different, who wins the Weibo vs. WeChat war could have a significant impact on Chinese society.

あなたがTencentやSinaの株を持っていたり、中国のソーシャルメディアのユーザー出ない限りは、こうした話はあまり興味が持てないかもしれない。ただ、サービスそのものが非常に異なっているため、WeiboとWeChatの闘いの行方は中国社会にとっても大きなインパクトをもたらしうるのだ。

As weibo has grown over the past several years, it has also made a dramatic impact on Chinese civil society and politics. Information spreads very quickly on microblogging services, and because of this Weibo has put a spotlight on social issues from censorship to corruption to environmental problems. I would argue that Weibo has quite literally redefined the way many users think about China, as it has taken what were previously understood to be “local” problems and demonstrated them to be national ones.

Weiboが過去数年成長してきたことに伴い、中国の市民社会や政治にも大きなインパクトをもたらした。マイクロブログサービス上で情報はあっという間に広がる。この性質のため、Weiboは検閲や汚職、環境問題などの社会問題に注目を集めることとなった。また多くのユーザーの中国に対する認識を改めることにも繋がった。つまり、それまで「ローカル」な問題と認識されていた事柄が、国全体の問題である事を見せつけてくれたのだ。

Five years ago, for example, you might think that the pollution of a local river was just a problem with a nearby factory, but thanks to Deng Fei’s weibo campaign and others, it’s easy to see on Weibo that many rivers nationwide have similar problems. So, what you previously considered a local problem is now a national one, and when that happens, you’re more likely to try to push for national changes instead of just complaining about your local authorities.

たとえば5年前、地元の川の汚染は近隣の工場からくるものとあなたは考えただろう。しかしDeng Fei氏によるWeiboキャンペーンなどにより、国全体で多くの河川に同様の問題があることがWeiboを通して簡単にわかるようになった。つまり、以前ならローカルの問題と捉えられていた問題が今は国全体のものとなった。こういう状況になると、地元の政府機関について不平をいうのではなく、国全体を変えようという動きが活発になってくる。

The access Weibo grants to unfiltered information (if you check it fast enough) from across the country instantly has already changed Chinese society, forcing both companies and governments to be more transparent, more responsive, and more willing to interact with the people they affect. Obviously, Weibo hasn’t transformed China into a representative democracy or anything, and there are plenty of problems with the service itself (starting with its draconian censorship practices, though they’re often circumventable). But even so, I think Chinese society is better off with Weibo than without it.

Weiboによってもたらされた、検閲されていない情報（検閲される前にすばやくチェックできれば、だが）に国の誰もがアクセスできる状況は、既に中国社会を変えた。企業や政府に対し、透明性や責任感、自発性を植え付ける事となった。もちろん、Weiboが中国を代議制民主主義国家に変えたわけではない。サービスそのものにも多くの問題がある（とりわけ、厳格な検閲。しばしば回避可能でもあるのだが）。だがそれにもかかわらず、私は中国社会にとって、Weiboはないよりはあった方が断然良いように思う。

That’s why Weibo’s fight with WeChat is so crucial. WeChat is a totally different service with a very different focus, but the more time users spend on WeChat, the less they’re spending on Weibo. And while chatting with your friends and following celebrities is fun, the service just isn’t designed for the swift passing-along of information the way that weibo is. WeChat’s focus is your circle of friends and your local area, Weibo’s focus is far wider. To return to our polluted river analogy, on Weibo you share your photos of the river with your followers all over the country, and they pass it on to theirs; quickly, it can go national.

だからWeiboのWeChatとの闘いは大事なのだ。WeChatは全く別のフォーカスに基づく全く別のサービスである一方で、ユーザーがWeChatで時間を使えば使うほど、Weiboに使われる時間は少なくなる。さらに友達とチャットしたり有名人をフォローするのは楽しいものの、WeChatはWeiboのように迅速に情報を伝達するためにはデザインされていない。WeChatのフォーカスが友達のサークルと地元エリアであるのに対し、Weiboのフォーカスはもっと広い。汚染された川の話に戻れば、Weiboの場合、国全体に散らばるフォロワーに川の写真を共有し、彼らがさらに共有する。あっという間に、国全体に広がることだってある。

But on WeChat, you bitch with your friends and coworkers about the river and it stays in your (mostly) local social circles. Even if it does spread, that spread isn’t easily visible or trackable, which makes it seem like fewer people are talking about it and thus reduces its impact.

でもWeChatでは、友達や同僚と皮について文句を言うだけだ。地域の限られた社会的繋がりの中に限定される。仮に広がったとしても、その広がりは目に見えづらく、少数の人が話しているだけに見え、インパクトを薄めてしまう。

WeChat is still an evolving service, and obviously there are ways of using it to move information quickly and distribute it widely (for example, getting a celebrity to share a message with all of their followers). But because it’s simply not designed for this kind of information sharing, I fear that the social impact that Weibo has had — which in my opinion has been mostly positive — could be undone if Chinese social networking users start spending their social time on WeChat instead of Weibo.

WeChatは未だ進化のただなかにあるサービスであり、もちろん情報をすばやく広く伝達させる方法はあるだろう（たとえば、有名人にメッセージをシェアさせるなど）。しかし、元々こうした情報共有のために設計されていないがゆえに、中国のソーシャルネットワークユーザーがWeiboよりWeChatで時間を使うようになると、Weiboが保有していた社会的なインパクト（個人的にはほとんどがポジティブなもの）が失われてしまうことを憂慮する。

Unfortunately, things are already looking grim, and even Sina has admitted it faces a stiff challenge in WeChat. 2013 looks to be WeChat’s year, but I hope that it doesn’t come at the expense of Weibo and the impact it has had on Chinese civil society.

ただ、状況は既に悪くなりはじめているようだ。Sinaですら、WeChatに対抗することの難しさを認めた。2013年はWeChatの年になりそうだが、その代償としてWeiboとその中国社会における影響力が失われないことを祈るばかりである。

The Lean And Kaizen Movement In Vietnam

If you don’t know lean and agile, you probably don’t work in a hip tech company. They’re two of the biggest trends in software development today and some consider them to be essential to entrepreneurship success. But I want to know: why are they so important?

I sat down with Christoph Kruppa to find out more about what lean and agile really means, and the small lean and agile community growing in Ho Chi Minh city. Especially, because they’ve got a big Lean Mindset and Kaizen Camp event next week.

もしリーンとアジャイルを知らないなら、きっとヒップなテック系企業で働いていないのだろう。今日のソフトウェア開発における2大トレンドであり、起業の成功の鍵にもなるという人すらいる。でも私は知りたい。どうしてそんなに大事とされているのか？

リーン、アジャイルが本質的に意味するところや、ホーチミン市で育ちつつある小さなリーンとアジャイルのコミュニティについて理解を深めるために、Christoph Kruppa氏と面会の機会を得た。ここで来週、リーン・マインドセットとカイゼンキャンプのイベントが来週予定されているからだ。

For those not in the know, Lean is a management style that emphasizes efficiency and reduced resources. Agile is the set of practices of Lean in software development. And Kaizen is the philosophy in Japan that was the progenitor of lean.

Lately, The Lean Startup by Eric Ries, which is considered to be the manifesto the lean startup movement, has been translated into Vietnamese. Most Vietnamese entrepreneurs have read his book or want to.

Basically, lean and agile are about putting products into the hands of customers as soon as possible so that the product and development team can iterate and improve on it as fast as possible.

補足しておくと、リーンは効率性とリソースの抑制に重きをおくマネジメント手法である。アジャイルはリーンの実践手法の一つで、ソフトウェア開発でよく使われる。そしてカイゼンは日本初の経営哲学で、リーンの祖先となるものだ。

最近になって、リーンスタートアップムーブメントのマニフェストとされる、Eric Ries氏による「リーン・スタートアップ」が、ベトナム語に翻訳された。多くのベトナム人起業家がこの本を読んだか、もしくは読みたいと考えている。

基本的にはリーンもアジャイルも、プロダクトと開発チームが可能な限り速く繰り返しと改善を実行できるように、カスタマーの手にプロダクトをなるべく早く渡すというものだ。

What is the state of Lean and Agile in Vietnam?

With roughly 200 scrum masters (a key position in software teams that pushes forward the process of agile) across Vietnam, over 700 members in our community and a handful of large and small companies using lean management and agile development like VNG, Gloops, Gameloft, Playsoft, and East Agile. I’d say it’s been growing a lot in the two years since we started. New companies are embracing it as important to increasing their productivity and cutting costs.

ベトナムでのリーンとアジャイルの現状はどうなっているのか？

ベトナム全体でおよそ200人のスクラムマスター（開発チームにおいてアジャイルプロセスを推進するキーポジション）、私たちのコミュニティに700名以上のメンバー、VNG、Gloops、Gameloft、Playsoft、East Agileなど大小様々な企業がリーンマネジメントとアジャイル開発を使っている現状からして、私たちが活動をはじめてからの2年で大きく成長したと言える。新しい企業は、生産性やコスト削減の観点からきわめて重要であるとして、この手法を積極的に取り入れようとしている。

Chris and his colleagues Alex Rosales and Tri Nhan Vu have organized 22 Agile Monthly events (numbering 30 to 80 people) since 2011 and bigger events like Agile Tour (with over 150 people) in Ho Chi Minh city where they invited foreign speakers to come coach and hold workshops for the community on best practices.

The Ho Chi Minh city team also syncs with an organizing team in Hanoi to bring in speakers and events.

Kruppa氏とその同僚Alex Rosales氏、Tri Nhan Vu氏は、2011年以来、22ものイベント（30〜80名が参加）を毎月オーガナイズしてきた。またホーチミン市では、より大きなAgile Tour（150名が参加）というイベントをオーガナイズして、海外の講演者を招待し、ベストプラクティスのためのコーチングやワークショップを開催した。

さらにホーチミン市のチームは、ハノイにあるオーガナイジングチームから、講演者やイベントを持ち込めるよう協働している。
