"Ernest and Celestine" is the coziest movie you'll likely see all year. Every frame is suffused with a fireplace kind of warmth that, for me at least, cast an immediate spell that didn't let up. The French-produced animated movie is skewed to kids, and unlike today's animated product from Hollywood, it isn't self-consciously concerned with making an appeal to adults: this simple story of an unlikely friendship between a mouse and a bear in a funny-animal world doesn't have any pop-culture jokes or winking irony.

But it's the overall integrity of the movie, directed by Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar, and Benjamin Rattar, adapting Belgian children's books by Gabrielle Vincent, that's key to its charm for children of all ages.
The movie begins in a kind of mouse orphanage, whose overseer tries to scare her charges with tales not of big bad wolves but big bad bears. Soon after this, mouse-dentist-in-training Celestine endures a tooth-hunting mishap that puts her out in the street for a night. She's discovered by grumpy, hungry, far-from-home and out of sorts bear Ernest, who thinks the mouse would make a tasty snack.

Anderson offers up a narrative device older still, a rich-girl/poor-boy variant that finds doe-eyed tycoon’s daughter Aurelia (Emily Browning) falling hard for a Britannia-imported slave gladiator known for a while only as “The Celt,” but later revealed to possess the mighty name of Milo (Kit Harington, so ripped and buff as to make any ordinary man’s resolve to get to the gym more melt into a puddle of futility). Milo’s a bit of a horse whisperer, which helps him get closer to the young lady, who often seems in the vicinity of equine complaints.

During my eight days at Sundance I consumed a whopping total of 22 movies, which is just shy of 3 films a day. As is the case with attending any festival, I regret missing some of the larger titles that received ample amounts of buzz and acclaim. Chief among those missing from my "watch list" are "Boyhood", "The Raid 2: Bernadal", "Calvary" and "The Voices", all of which Simon Abrams covered here.

No matter; I caught enough movies that I can confidently claim satisfaction. Those despondently decrying Sundance's slate of films this year should look no further than this list, Simon Abrams' list and this piece by Eric Kohn.

There are a handful of strong sequences. And there's a sequence near the end that feels like the seed of a far richer, stranger sequel: a sendup of the corny "inspirational" TV movies that viewers of a certain age will remember all too well, in which a character overcomes a handicap after years of feeling sorry for himself. But these are bright spots in a film that's just a couple of notches above an off-brand "SNL" time-waster.

In the early days of the film, China still lives under an informal capitalism, but changes are in the wind. These good citizens understand that the nation must change after the revolution. They do their best to go along, but what they do not understand is that no rational national plan exists. The political winds, which change direction from season to season, function only to bring an end to dissent and individuality--to create a climate of fear within which the country can be controlled.

It wasn't until the British occupation of Egypt, over eight centuries later, that the first dam across the Nile was successfully built (1898-1902). At the time of the Old Aswan Dam's construction, nothing of that scale had ever been attempted. It was the largest masonry dam in the world.
