3. Don’t just fall in love

Remember: An acquisition is a marriage, not a wedding. It takes more than butterflies in the stomach and a great live band to be successful. You need total honesty, careful planning, and detailed, realistic expectation-setting. Nearly six months in, our relationship with AVG thrives because we were explicit about what post-acquisition, day-to-day life would be like.

Though it’s early days, Twitter’s recent acquisition of social media talent agency Niche seems smart in this way. Twitter surpassed analysts’ revenue and EPS expectations in 2014, but year-end MAU was soft. So you could say the company wanted a way to boost users, but Niche will likely increase revenue, too. And Twitter clearly wants Niche to keep doing what it has done really well by bringing the team in with a healthy retention package.

4. Be honest

It’s tempting to inflate numbers to speed things up. Resist. Deals take longer than you expect. Those puffed-up numbers will bite you in the butt. Tell the truth and stick with it. Assume the transaction will take 12 to 18 months. If early on you play fast and loose with expectations, you will regret it when things come down to the wire and you’re missing targets. You’ll watch the deal fall apart right under you. Under-promise and over-deliver.

4. 素直さに徹すること

物事をいち早く進めようと数字を大きく見せたくなる気持ちはわかるが、ぐっとこらえること。取引には想像以上の時間がかかるものなのだ。誇張された数字はいつか自分に痛い目を見せる。事実を伝え、飛躍しないことだ。たとえば、商談に1年から1年半を要するとしよう。早い段階で期待に泳がされてしまうと、最後の最後になってから目標を見失い、泣きを見ることになる。まさに手中にしようとしていた商談が消えてなくなるのを目にすることだろう。約束はあくまで控えめに、結果は大きく残す。

5. Say everything 7 times

Announcing the deal to employees isn’t a one-time thing. Ongoing transparency is vital. Be specific about what the change means for everyone’s daily life and future — repeatedly, and in many forms: town hall, one-on-one, executive drop-in.

We have two people here who worked for Flip video when Cisco acquired it, which they said was a terrible experience. Listening to them gave me solid “what not to do” lessons. Apparently, the CEO came in, announced they were being bought, then wasn’t heard from again. There was no real plan for company goals and what employees’ roles would be. Sure enough, they shuttered the business a couple of years later, laid everyone off. Don’t be that guy. Be a leader — which is not a one-shot job.

But if you think this is all getting off the rails, well, think again. Through the first two months of 2015, initial public offerings of stock are down to 26, a drop of 35 percent from the same period a year ago, according to statistics from the Renaissance Capital IPO Center.

Instagram now lets brands share advertising ‘stories’

Instagram said today it has begun offering its advertising partners a new way to share their marketing “stories” on the photo-sharing service.

In a blog post, Instagram said it now lets brands share what it calls “carousel ads.”

“Carousel ads give brands more flexibility in telling their stories,” Instagram wrote, “by allowing people who view their ads to swipe left to see additional images and link to a website of the brand’s choice.”

Essentially, Instagram is looking at this as a way for brands to share what amounts to multi-page print advertisements on the mobile service, but also the ability to bring users to a Web site to see more. “For instance, a fashion company could use the carousel to deconstruct the individual products in a ‘look,'” Instagram said. “A car company might share an array of different features of a vehicle and provide a link to learn more about the new model. Or, an advertiser could showcase how multiple ingredients come together to make a delicious meal.”

Users can scroll past ads they’re not interested in.

Instagram said the new service will be rolled out on a limited basis, and that more users will begin seeing carousel ads in the coming weeks.

Intel aims to double the number of women in gaming

Building on Intel’s diversity announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, the world’s biggest chip maker announced that it will work with the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) to double the number of women working in gaming.

As part of this expansion of IGDA’s programs, Intel has already sponsored 40 game development students to attend Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, where the company announced the news.

Intel also said that it will hold the Intel Challenge Katowice, a women’s e-sports tournament, under the same roof as the finals of Intel Extreme Masters beginning March 12.

Intel announced at CES it would invest $300 million in programs that will bring more women and other diverse talent to the tech and game industries. It was a response to a mistake where Intel pulled ads from a game publication after a group of gamers complained about a pro-feminist column. The problem was that Intel then realized it looked bad, because it seemed like it was supporting those with an anti-women point of view. Intel chief executive Brian Krzanich stepped up to announced the diversity program in response.

“We need not only diverse games, but diversity in the industry,” said Pete Baker, a vice president of software and services at Intel.

About 48 percent of game players are women, according to the Entertainment Software Association. But only 22 percent of those creating games are female.

‘We see this disparity even though we are in the 21st century,” said Kate Edwards, executive director of the IGDA, at Intel’s press event. “Intel has been a fantastic partner for the IGDA. We will see great changes in game content.”

She said she hopes more companies in the industry will step forward on issues of diversity. The programs focus on acquisition of talent and retention of talent. The IGDA hopes to double the number of women in games in the next decade.

“We realize that’s something like a space program goal, but that’s why you do it,” Edwards said.

Intel also announced a program to benefit all game developers: Achievement Unlocked.

The program is a coordinated worldwide effort to help game developers succeed when creating games that target Intel Graphics hardware, Intel Core processors, and Intel Atom processors.

A new game developer portal will let Intel communicate with game developers. Achievement Unlocked will also offer improved technical assistance to developers worldwide and additional success mentoring and go-to-market opportunities.

In still another development, Intel said it is helping Indie studio Flying Mollusk use Intel’s RealSense technology, which lets you control a game with hand gestures, to power the NeverMind ambitious bio-feedback enhanced psychological horror game Nevermind.

Intel also cut deals with Ubisoft, Codemasters, and Funcom to develop games using Intel technology.

Alibaba announces new $315M ‘not-for-profit’ fund to invest in Taiwan startups

Alibaba just officially announced it intends launch a NT$10 billion (about US$316 million) fund to invest in startups in Taiwan.

According to the company, the fund will be managed by professional investment managers and will operate on a non-profit-esque model, wherein profits generated from investments will be re-invested into portfolio companies. The firm adds that the fund will help startups “start and grow businesses on marketplaces and platforms in the Alibaba ecosystem, enabling them to offer products and services in the Greater China region.”

While Alibaba’s announcement marks the official disclosure of the fund, it will still be subject to approval from Taiwan authorities before the company can carry forth with investments.

Ma first hinted at the establishment of a dedicated Taiwan fund when he visited the island last December. While giving a speech in front of CEOs from both sides of the straits, the ecommerce mogul expounded on the virtues of investing in young people, and encouraged budding entrepreneurs to head to China to start businesses with Alibaba’s assistance.

In February, Alibaba announced that it would launch a HK$1 billion (about US$120 million) fund for Hong Kong startups. That fund will operate along a similar model.

Alibaba’s direct influence in Taiwan as an internet company is less than that in the mainland. The company has been aggressively recruiting Taiwanese vendors to join Taobao, and even holds regular classes that teach potential merchants how to navigate the crowded marketplace. While Taiwanese consumers will regularly purchase items from Taobao or Tmall, which support local payment and delivery customs, the island’s ecommerce industry has matured independently of Alibaba. PCHome and Yahoo! Taiwan are generally cited as the island’s top two ecommerce providers.

Taiwan is home to a handful of early- and late-stage venture capital funds. Pinehurst Advisors, AppWorks Ventures, and Kamia invest semi-regularly in local teams, while CyberAgent Ventures and Cherubic Ventures both have staff on the ground. WI Harper, meanwhile, often participates in bets upwards of US$2 million on firms all over the world, from its offices in Taipei, San Francisco, and Beijing.

This year in particular, Taiwan looks poised to see more money for startups enter its borders. In addition to as-yet unannounced funds, Taiwan’s National Development Council recently pledged US$83 million across three venture capital firms as part of a long-term plan to fuel the island’s startup ecosystem.
