The key for this step is to collect user data and iterate the product accordingly. He gave a simple AB testing example: If an entrepreneur can’t decide which colored fonts to use, test it by giving half of the users color A and the other half color B. If the data (time spent on site or bounce rate) reflected that color A is better, then it is obvious that color A should be used for all users. The process of build-measure-learn will continue as a cycle of improving the product.

From what I understand, Innovation Works is very particular with two criteria when choosing its investment:

Once these two criteria are met (on top of its other criteria, etc), Innovation Works is happy to provide funds to let the entrepreneurs develop their products, market it at low cost, gather data, and improve the product. If the product proves to be good, Innovation Works may invest in the start-up again.

Lee is skeptical that Chinese fresh graduates with little experience can be good entrepreneurs. Of course, his remarks caused quite a big reaction from the moderator and the crowd. The moderator listed a lot of examples of drop-out/fresh from school entrepreneurs, including Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.

Sky-mobi Teams Up With Sina Weibo in Mobile Partnership

When we last caught up with Chinese mobile online media company Sky-mobi (NASDAQ:MOBI) it was at the Global Mobile Internet Conference this past April. CEO Michael Song discussed his company’s journey to IPO, and noted that user experience and value are key to bringing in new users. Perhaps this was part of the motivation behind its newly announced partnership with Sina.

That sounds a little vague but we were told that more information will come in December.

Rumor: Tencent Invested US$ 100M in Chinese SNS Kaixin001

Tencent was said to have invested US$ 100M in China’s social networking service Kaixin001, according to people close to Tencent the Chinese internet giant.


Founded in March 2008 by former Sina interim CTO, Kaixin001 appeals to China’s white-collar workers with it’s made in-house social games such as “Parking War”(争车位), “Happy Farm”(like Farmville) and so on.

I still remembered Chinese media raved about the service with unbroken string of reports saying how much people adored and addicted to Kaixin001’s games – especially Happy Farm – that some addicts even set up alarm to wake them up in the dead of night so they could harvest(or stole) their virtual neighbors’ “digital” crops before the owners themselves do so.

Kaixin001 had its peak in 2008 and 2009, while now is suffering from drastic traffic drop that the site saw its traffic has plummeted 65% over the past 18 months.

Qihoo 360 also reportedly tried to invest in Kaixin001, while the Beijing-based company turned down the offer.

Dixon almost exclusively invests in seed stage deals and looks for high-tech startups, but also invests in industries outside high tech to diversify the risk. When he looks at a company he is not only looking at the technology, but also at the team involved. He will ask people who know the founders what they think of them to get “Social Proof” before making an investment.

Additionally, Thiel has also recently given 20 kids under age 20 $100,000 to pursue innovative scientific and technical projects. It is clear that Thiel believes the millennial generation encompasses the visionaries of the future.

Maples prefers to invest in startups that have low capital requirements, meaning that a company won’t need tens of millions to succeed and prove its model. To Maples, one of the most important qualities for a startup company is a solid team.

Conway has focused his investing strategy on early stage, high-tech companies, and continues to examine current social, social commerce and mobile markets.
