A social network thrives on a strong community and Renren doesn’t seem to be able to do that as well as Facebook or even China’s microblog, Sina Weibo. But then again, who can? I believe Renren’s impressive IPO is at best a speculative surge since it is the first social network to be listed on the NYSE. Let us know your thoughts.

As Aetna reported a 4% rise in first-quarter net income, the U.S. health care insurer said it plans to buy what it's calling the largest independent third-party administrator of self-funded health plans in the United States.
Aetna said it would acquire Prodigy Health Group from its majority owner, One Equity Partners, for about $600 million. Prodigy operates in 15 states and has about 600,000 medical members.

The acquisition "extends Aetna's reach into the third-party administrator business while providing a separate option under the Prodigy brands that addresses affordability and quality for middle-sized and small businesses and customers who are primarily price-focused."

More employers may turn to self-insuring their employees' health benefits in the wake of the U.S. health care reform law. Employers with as few as 100 employees are now looking to self-insure, according to MagnaCare, a TPA for self-insured companies in New York and New Jersey. The issue is about employers understanding what their health plan is costing them.

Prodigy also has a medical management business and a pharmacy benefits management business. The deal, expected to close in the second half of this year, needs antitrust regulatory approval.
