South Korea to invest $400M into startups making wearables, drones, and self-driving cars

Under the helm of President Park Geun-hye, the South Korean government has been heavily involved in the local startup scene, and committed KRW 2.17 trillion (US$1.97 billion) last year and KRW 2.25 trillion (US$2.04 billion) in 2013 to startups in their infancy. Today, South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that another US$400 million will be invested into developing “new and indigenous products and technologies that will help boost the country’s economy and exports,” Yonhap News Agency reports.

朴槿恵大統領指揮の下、韓国政府は地方スタートアップ領域に大きく関与しており、未成熟なスタートアップに、昨年に2兆1,700億ウォン（19億7,000万米ドル）、2013年には2兆2,500億ウォン（20億4,000万米ドル）の支援を行った。現在、韓国の産業通商資源部はさらに4億米ドルを、"国の経済と貿易の促進を手助けする新しくて国産の製品とテクノロジー"の開発に投資つもりである、とYonhap News Agencyが報道した。

Of that sum, KRW 194 billion (US$176 million) is set aside for 13 new industrial growth engines, such as smart wearable devices, self-driving vehicles, and drones.

The chief objective of this is to diversify the country’s outbound shipments, which – despite reaching a new annual high last year – is dominated by five key industries, including semiconductors and petroleum.

2014 saw a growing number of South Korean startups achieving a measure of success, whether it be going public or receiving big investments. It also saw Daum Kakao, the parent company of the popular KakaoTalk app, looking to hedge its bets with an investment firm that has US$90 million in the bank. The upward trend seems likely to continue into the new year, with the government also setting aside a US$181 million budget for early-stage startups in general.

Alibaba and Tencent to Launch Consumer Credit Rating Services

China’s central bank yesterday issued a notice allowing eight Chinese private organizations, including Alibaba’s Sesame and Tencent, to prepare for the launch of their consumer credit rating services over a six-month period.

It’s no secret that Ant Financial Services Group, Alibaba’s finance arm, has been developing Sesame, a credit scoring service based on user profiles and the behavioural data Alibaba’s marketplaces has collected. Alipay, the online payment service under Ant Financial, has had more than 300 million users.

中国の中央銀行が昨日、AlibabaのSesameとTencentを含む8つの中国民間団体に、6ヶ月にわたる消費者信用格付けサービスのローンチに向けた準備をする許可を通達した。

Alibabaの金融部門であるAnt Financial Services Groupが、Alibabaの市場が収集したユーザのプロフィールと行動データを元にした信用度採点サービスのSesameを開発しているというのは隠すまでもないことである。Ant Financial傘下のオンライン支払いサービス、Alipayは3億を超えるユーザを抱えている。

One month after the Sesame’s website went live, Tencent announced it would roll out a similar system, intending to leverage the vast amount of data generated by its 800+ million monthly users.

Currently only the Chinese central bank, state ministries and local governments keep track of consumer credit records, but their data are not open to the public. There are not yet ant FICO score-like services available in the country.

Both Alibaba and Tencent, in related moves, are building private banks. The website of Tencent’s WeBank was launched a week ago, but no offerings are available on the site so far. It has been reported that Alibaba’s venture is named MYbank.

Project Echo (Singapore, working title)

Remember Lurking, the award-winning game from a group of Digipen Singapore students? While the Lurking IP belongs to the school, the genius that came up with it does not, and the group – now Gattai Games – is hard at work on a spiritual successor called Project Echo. The first-person horror game will employ Lurking’s infamous sound-based concept, and explore concepts the team did not get to do while in school. It’s still in early development, but that gif already looks pretty heart-stopping.

Digipen Singaporeの学生グループが製作した受賞歴のあるゲームLurkingを覚えているだろうか？ Lurkingの知的財産は学校に属する一方で、この天才達はそれは違うと気づき、グループ-現在のGattai Games-はProject Echoという似たような後継機の製作に没頭している。この一人称視点のホラーゲームはLurkingの評判の悪いサウンドを元にしたコンセプトを採用し、このチームが学校では出来なかったコンセプトを探求している。まだ初期開発段階ではあるが、ゲームのGIFはすでに息を呑むような仕上がりである。

Battle Spheres (Singapore)

Battle Spheres from Ixora Studios looks like it’s most definitely a clone of Mixi’s Monster Strike, but don’t let that stop you from trying it out when it launches. The slingshot card-battle game, which involves players destroying each others’ characters by knocking into them, still isn’t available outside of Japan. Hopefully Battle Spheres will at least be as entertaining as its direct inspiration is.

Zero Legend (Indonesia, working title)

Now Alkemis Games is a very recent entrant in the industry, but it undoubtedly has some of the best art I’ve seen come out of an Indonesian indie game studio. It recently received an undisclosed round of seed funding from East Ventures to work on the project code-named Zero Legend, a free-to-play mobile fantasy RPG. Zero Legend will revolve around collecting and growing over 100 characters and taking them dungeon diving. There will a focus on in-game communities and events as well, allowing players to take part in quests and tournaments with friends. It’s set for release as early as spring 2015.

Zero Legendは100以上のキャラクターを集めて育て、ダンジョンダイビングへと連れて行くことを中心に展開されることになる。
ゲーム内のコミュニケーションとイベントにも焦点を当て、プレイヤーが友人との冒険旅とトーナメントに参加出来るようになる。早ければ2015年春にリリース予定である。

That War Game (Singapore, working title)

Springloaded Games was pretty secretive in the last half of 2014, and it’s for a good reason. The indie studio is planning a slew of game releases this year, one of its most notable being a quirky pixel-art game set in the past of the same universe as Springloaded’s humorous Tiny Dice Dungeon. This as-yet unnamed project will be a combination of management and multiplayer battles, and will give hints as to how the Tiny Dice Dungeon world regressed to what it is today.

South Korean startups have been given the green light, and the nation has become one of the key startup hubs in Asia. After the dot.com bubble burst, few people dared to start their own business. However, some internet portals and 0nline game companies survived the downturn to became so-called “Unicorns“, companies valued at over US$1 billion, leading the stream of success stories. The “Creative Economy”, the Park administration’s key strategy, aims to build an economy that is mainly powered by startups rather than established players like Samsung, LG and Hyundai. The government allocated a US$12.6 billion fund for 2015 to support Korean startups, a 5.8 % increase over this year.

1. Gangnam is a hot place for tech startups as well as tourists

If you are thinking of visiting Seoul to check out the startup scene, I recommend you visit Gangnam. Yes, it’s the name from that famous song. Gangnam district is the commercial center and is now becoming a hub for startups. Most Accelerators, co-working spaces and startups are now located in Teheran-ro, creating synergy. D.camp and Maru180 are well known co-working spaces for startups, launched by Banks Association and Asan Nanum Foundation respectively. The first Google campus in Asia and Naver’s Accelerator will also open in Gangnam next year.

2. Successful entrepreneurs are now becoming angel investors and venture capitalists

Changseong Ho and his wife Jiwon Moon started their first business in 2000, though it turned out to be a failure. However, looking back upon the past experience they started Viki, a crowdsourced subtitling platform. Viki was successfully acquired by Rakuten for US$200 million last year. They then started Vingle, an interest-based content platform and later established an Accelerator, theVentures, to help young entrepreneurs with mentorship and investment.

The FuturePlay’s CEO Jung-hee Ryu successfully sold Olaworks to Intel while the company’s CTO Jason Han sold his company to Korea Telecom. Using their experience as engineers, they established FuturePlay, an incubator providing specialized programs for hardware engineers.

The co-founders of KnowRe (a cloud-based secondary math program) were mathematical prodigies at Seoul National University, KAIST and POSTECH, Korea’s elite universities. They were authors of a best selling math-learning book as well as successful math instructors in Daechidong, Korea’s foremost private education zone. They brought fundamental math concepts to KnowRe to help students having problems with the subject, and set up headquarters both in Seoul and New York City.

Goldman Sachs invested US$36 million in Baedal Minjok, the food delivery app. The company, Woowa Brothers, was founded in 2010 by two brothers, Bongjin Kim, a designer and Kwangsoo Kim, an engineer. Bongjin Kim had previously worked for Naver, Korea’a primary search portal. The brothers are heading to Japan with Naver’s messaging app Line by forming a new joint venture called Line Bros. Corp. They are currently operating a food delivery service called Line Wow in Japan.

4. Korean startups are getting global attention

Between, the social network service for couples, hit a major milestone by reaching 10 million downloads globally. The app developer VCNC revealed that 50% of their users are from overseas, mainly Japan, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Earlier this year, DeNA, Japan’s mobile service leader made a strategic investment in the company to support its 1 million Japanese users.

Memebox was the first Korean startup to be accepted on Y Combinator’s program. The company successfully presented on demoday on March and has said that Y Combinator Startups internally chose them as one of the top three startups on its winter 2014 program. Memebox ships to 36 countries, including China.

4. 韓国のスタートアップが世界の注目を浴びている

カップル向けソーシャルネットワークサービスのBetweenが、世界中で1,000万ダウンロードを達成し大金星をあげた。アプリ開発者のVCNCは50％のユーザは海外からで、主に日本、台湾そして東南アジアであると明らかにした。今年始め、日本のモバイルサービスリーダーのDeNAが、自社の100万人の日本人ユーザをサポートするために、同社に対し戦略的投資を行った。

MemeboxはY Combinatorのプログラムで認められることになった韓国初のスタートアップ であった。同社は5月のDemo Dayへ無事に参加し、Y Combinator Startupsが社内で、2014年度冬季プログラムでのスタートアップトップ3のうちの1つとして彼らを選出したと述べた。
