Unfortunately, while "The Trip" was grounded by Coogan's thoughtful, involving character arc, "The Trip to Italy" is knowingly adrift. Here, Coogan shrinks back, shifting the spotlight onto co-star Brydon. So while Brydon nervously makes faces in the mirror, chats up a beautiful stranger, and nervously tries out for a Michael Mann film, Coogan Skypes with his son, and distractedly mocks Brydon's naivete and boisterous insensitivity.

No matter; I caught enough movies that I can confidently claim satisfaction. Those despondently decrying Sundance's slate of films this year should look no further than this list, Simon Abrams' list and this piece by Eric Kohn.

It may well be that Roger's greatest passion was for human contact: for sharing, giving and engaging with others (as his famous Movie Answer Man interractions always testified to.) Unlike some other great movie critics, he genuinely gave you the impression of a regular guy turning to you from his seat and striking up a conversation about the movie you just saw: "So, what did you think…?". His revolutionary approach made it possible for the seats to be located on the opposite ends of the world—without making the conversation any less real and heartfelt.

Glass's signature repetitious motifs, always churning toward resolution yet continually denying it, carry us in suspense across shots that last minutes, not seconds. As form-fitting scores, go, Glass's work for "Visitors" feels skintight. Reggio's process includes making sure Glass is "marinated" in the film's footage before writing a single note. It's Glass who gives "Visitors" something like a structure, alternating between long, contemplative stretches and moments of ecstatic grandeur
