If there is one lesson that Bill Gates has learned the hard way it is that being famous and being infamous are closely linked. You can't expect to become the richest man in the world without making some enemies - and in the computer industry Gates made more than his share of those. He also attracted the interest of anti-trust authorities, both in the US and Europe, who have questioned whether some of Microsoft's business practices are anti-competitive for many years.

Many of his industry peers from the days when he started the business out either bowed out, or stepped back, before him. That included his former partner Paul Allen (he left Microsoft as a result of ill-health when he was diagnosed as suffering from Hodgkin's disease). Gates was one of the few to stick around in the war zone, along with IT heavyweights such as Steve Jobs at Apple, Larry Ellison at Oracle, and Scott McNealy at Sun Microsystems.

Microsoft countered this criticism by inviting software developers from other companies to Redmond for briefings about the future development of its operating system. In reality, however, it is very unlikely that any such Chinese Wall could realistically be expected to work in such a competitive industry. For one thing, it flies in the face of the concept of the learning organization. In the real world the very notion of Chinese Walls is somewhat naive, something recognized by the antitrust settlement, which called for Microsoft to share its application programming interfaces with third-party companies, and open up other intellectual property and technical know-how.

Gates was famous for replying promptly to email messages from any Microsoft employee. One senior manager who left the company under a cloud is rumoured not to have checked his email
often enough.

The existence of feedback loops at Microsoft also gave rise to some concerns among competitors. One area where confusion existed was with the so-called Chinese Wall between operating system development teams and applications development teams. Owning the industry standard operating system gave Microsoft's application developers a huge advantage over other software companies.
